I am unable to read and/or send email from my laptop while traveling. I have a new HP DV 9000 with Vista and it has a built in wireless connection for internet access.
My home ISP is ATT and my mail program is Thunderbird. So, I have a pop3 and smtp user settings and that seems to be the obstacle. I know I can use a web based email, but I would rather check-in with my existing account where ever I am on the road. I've tried
Any help from the brain trust would be greatly appreciated.
Get a web-based email address -- always available, wherever you go.

Have you tried webmail.att.net? You should be able to access it on the web there

If you're currently using Thunderbird on your home computer, and it's working for your email at home, then all you should have to do is install Thunderbird onto your laptop, copy the POP3 and SMTP settings exactly as they are on your home box, and it should work exactly the same, no matter where you are, so long as you have internet access.
If it's the settings you're missing to do so, then you need to find out from AT&T what their POP3 address is, and then enter your current user name and password to be able to access your mail via Thunderbird.
Either way, as long as the program is configured correctly, and you have access via a hot-spot or access point, it should work without any trouble.
Yet another solution is Microsoft's new Windows Live Mail. I've been using it for awhile now (just came out of Beta last month) and it works quite well for both web-based email and POP3. Link here. (http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview) It's free and works both in Vista (32&64bit) and XP (32bit only).
I've been using Google's gmail for a few years. Both gmail and Yahoo! mail allow you to acceess your email from any computer, anywhere.
Although I use Mozilla's Firefox as my browser, I've never tried Thunderbird.

Turn off the VISTA firewall and the Norton Firewall that usually is provided by HP. I'll bet you will be able to connect. Then turn back on the Norton and let it configure.
This fixes 90% of the Vista machines I have been forced to work on.

You might also want to try using POPS/IMAPS instead from outside AT&T's network. I don't use them, so I don't know if they're that sophisticated or not.
Just a thought...
