RadioShack reported that fourth quarter 2002 total sales decreased 1 percent, to $1.5 billion, from $1.52 billion recorded in fourth quarter 2001.

On a comparable store basis, sales were up 2 percent for the quarter.

The national electronics chain took it on the chin when it came to home entertainment sales. Those sales were down 17 percent, and the decline was attributed to lower sales of satellite TV systems.

RadioShack sells both DirecTV and EchoStar's DISH Network at its stores.

However, RadioShack is optimistic about its overall future. "Year-over-year sales, which improved every month of the quarter, were very strong in product categories such as portable computing, digital photography, personal electronics and portable audio," said Leonard Roberts, chairman and CEO.

"When combined with a strong start to January, the company's sales trend is clearly improving," he said.

I think RadioShack was DirecTV only before, but they got a deal (because of the pending merger probably) to sell DISH in radioshack.

Anyway, sales of everything will be down with this bad economy. Maybe their slow sales of DBS systems will make them reconsider (not) axing the ham radio department as a source of additional revenue. (Although I wish they would since Radioshack is notorious for selling radios to anyone, with or without license). Also, other stores were probably able to offer better bargains than they were.

I used to look up at Radioshack for everything electronic, when they had free catalogs and oodles of parts and hobbyist kits, but now I hardly even go there anymore, except when I buy stuff on clearance.

Radio Shack (and WalMart too) only have E* because of a contract with Thomson for the RCA branded 301s.

I'd be curious to look at their sales stats for P* and D* and now E*.

Funny now hearing radio commercials from Radio Shack advertising that they will no longer ask for your address!!! Finally, now that is a real improvement.

Do they still ask for your name and phone number or social security number though?
