View Full Version : HR21...why two lines?

Had a frustrating day of installation yesterday, particularly because it appears my home theater guy neglected to connect up a few lines, so now my HR21 has only one line running into it at the moment...
Why does DTV need two lines going in when Dish makes theirs to do that internally? Makes for messier installs.
Anyway, another question: what is the ethernet jack for? I am assuming DTV doesn't have remote record, so what purpose do they serve? And why two of them?

The ethernet jack allows for "DirecTV on Demand" (see sticky for details):
http://www.dbstalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=137
They are planning for remote booking in the future, I think it's in limited beta now.
Don't know why it has two ports though...

Two sat lines are for 2 internal tuners. Watch one channel while recording another at the same time...
Dual Ethernet jacks are for network/Web connection and for being able to daisy chain network-based devices, including XBOX and other ethernet-connected devices.

If you search for the HR21 first look, I believe, you'll find that the 2 ethernet ports act as an internal switch.... So you can connect another device into the HR21, as opposed to straight into your router/switch/etc.
Pretty handy if you had 2 DVRs sitting one on top of the other, as many of our friends here at DBStalk do. YOu can connect the 2nd DVR into the HR21 with just a little jumper cable and it makes for a little cleaner install.
The second ethernet port is nothing more than an available port from an internal switch, so you can connect something else to the ethernet. Ethernet does permit DirecTV on Demand (DOD or VOD), as well as remote booking, you do want to connect high speed internet if you have it.
For right now, you do need two coax lines, one for each tuner. You can run with only one, but then you lose the ability to record one channel while watching another. A new technology that is not generally available yet, single wire multiswitch or SWM (do a search) will let you use only one line.

Why does DTV need two lines going in when Dish makes theirs to do that internally? As it was with E*, D* has to get an installed base of single wire capable machines out there before they release their single wire solution. D* is a few years behind in this process. IIRC, they still don't offer a single wire capable SD DVR yet.

I had assumed that I could only daisy chain DVR's together. Can I use the second port to daisy chain my HR21 to my HD DVD player?

You should be able to daisy chain any ethernet device.
You should be able to daisy chain any ethernet device.
In the manual its states that the ethernet ports put out 5 volts of power and that you should check compatibility with the equipment that you will be hooking up. I would like to run my A/V receiver (Denon 3808) ethernet through this port but I do not want to risk damaging the receiver's ethernet port. Since I have two HR21's and an A/V receiver in one location it would much easier to run a single line to the router.
Is the 5 volt power standard for ethernet connections?
Is anyone aware of any risks with this?
What equipment might they have been referring to that would have a problem with the 5 volts of power?
Does the internal switch continue to work if the power on the HR-21 is turned off?
Whats the USB port for on the HR21-700.

It also supports an RS232 serial to USB adapter to allow control of the HR20 by higher end home automation systems.

(1) You still need the two lines because the SWM trials aren't over yet. It's just not a readily available tech. yet from D*. Have them install it correctly, call D* they will help that.
(2) Uset he top ethernet port for connection to your network, use the bottom as the switch if necessary, now remote booking is in Beta and works good with the hr20, but the hr21 is not supported yet. As far as it goes the internet connection does not help in this. It is done from the Sat. The connection is for VOD (DOD) either way there is a beta running on the hr21 since last week that activated that feature and will be national at some time. (no one really knows when). So be patient and get your setup ready cause there are some new features coming soon to reciever and your going to like it. :D
Future use.
So I can't use it to hook up a USB wireless Network Adapter?

Go to any electronics site and type in ethernet bridge. You will find them. They make the ethernet port wireless capable.

Are there any recommendations that can handle multiple devices..ie XBox 360 and the HR21-700?

Forgive me because I am new at all this stuff. If I have a belkin USB wireless network adapter that i bought for the XBOX360...36 bucks!! anyhoo, I then thought about getting the HR21-700 hooked up via the internet. My DSL Wireless Modem/router is located upstairs. I do not have any phone jacks in the living room where the DVR is installed and the XBox 360 is located.
What do i really need to get this all to work properly?

Ok first you will need an wirless gaming adapter, or and ethernet bride. It cannot work on the usb adapter. I paid $50 for mine at Walmart. Lynksys was $79.99 at the time. Then you will configure the adapter for you network through you computer and whloa plu git in to the hr21 and run the network setup and you should be on. What router do you have?

I have a 2wire that was supplied by ATT...

No i'm saying the usb adapter won't work with an hrxx. It will work with the 360. Mine is through the rear usb port. I know that will work, but you will need an ethernet adapter for the hr21 or a hard wire if possible. Once you have that we can setup and get online with the hr21, there is also the media share option once you are up and running on the network.

What it is referring to is a 5Volt DC PoE (power over ethernet) voltage that is present on the Ethernet port. This allows small devices like wireless ethernet adapters to be powered from the ethernet port. Only devices that are constructed to take advantage of that voltage supply will receive it. By standard, a non-PoE device will not have the pins that carry the voltage connected internally.

See rocker's link to the lynksys version of the gaming adapter. Pauper. And It was more expensive then the one I bought , It is popular though and I see it all the time at BB and CC.

CarlInteresting. I searched online and found the capabilities exposed over the RS232 interface. I don't see what would really be interesting for people to have access to here, unless you're mainly just interfacing the remote control with some other system's remote.

Wireless Gaming Adapter - one port
Wireless Ethernet Bridge (or Wireless Ethernet Adapter) - typically 4 ports

You should be able to daisy chain any ethernet device.
If I can connect my old HR10-250 with my new HR21 through the ethernet port, what else do I have to do to use the HR10-250. INstruction or links are appreciated.
CN
An Ethernet bridge:
Operates at the Ethernet layer to switch, forward & broadcast unknown frames.
Ignores IP addresses and does not perform IP routing
Requires no configuration, it just worksThompson/RCA used the two-port Ethernet bridge in the HR20-100 because it was lower cost than a single port device.
The extra port comes in handy, especially for connecting a Blu-Ray or HD DVD player.
whats that?

So it can get expensive to run a game adapter to each network device in your house. In my daughter's room she has a HR20, XBOX 360, and her computer. What I did was to get 2 Linksys WAP54G wireless access points and sent them up as bridges. So that's one downstairs and one upstairs. Then you can hook up a 8 port switch to the access point upstairs and now I just have to run and Ethernet cable to each device. You could hook up a hundred port switch and go crazy.
