probably asked ad infinitum but I would like to know aside from the manufacturer difference is there any practical or performance difference between the hr20 100 and 700? I know the 700 isnt available from directv anymore. thats NOT what I am asking. are the features in the boxes the same or is it like the h20-100, 600 difference in that the hd channels can be selected by default, the tuner is more sensitive, [ota] and so forth?
thanks in advance.
Essentially the same. They aren't always on the exact same software build, but you would have a hard time telling without knowing which one you were using.
Now, the HR21 series has a major difference in that there is no OTA tuners so you can only record programming from the sat and not both the sat and OTA.

Is there a larger hard drive in which ever one is newer?
Before getting my HR21, I saw HR20's that claimed 30 hours of HD recording time and others that claimed 50 hours.

The hard drive in the HR20-700 is 300gb and the one in the HR20-100/HR21 is 320gb, so the storage capacity is about the same. The 30 hours recording time is for mpeg-2 HD and 50 hours is for mpeg-4 HD.
:)
The -100 has a coaxial digital audio output jack where the -700 doesn't. The -100 is silver and the -700 is black.

The HR20-700 is black? My HR21-700 is black, but I thought all the HR20's were silver. Maybe I need to trade this piece of junk in for an HR20-700.

The HR20-700's ARE silver, all of them. IIRC there were a very few HR20-100's produced in black. The only black HR's now are the HR21's.
Basically, all of the HR20 receivers are the same and all of the HR21 receivers are the same.
For whatever reason DirecTV uses multiple manufacturers to produce their machines.
The HR20 series has 2 ATSC tuners for OTA
The HR21 series does not have ATSC tuners built-in
The feature sets are supposed to be the same, but at present DirecTV hasn't finalized software features across all platforms. They seem to start with the HR20-700 and then when they deem it stable add those features to the other receivers.
Later HR20-700s were also coming with a 320GB drive...not a 300GB as the original batch had.

ok well because directv thinks I should pay 299 for an hr whatever, most likely without ota capacity, I just bought a 'brand new' hr20 on ebay for 219 including ripoff 30 bucks shipping. but its still a net savings. merry christmas to me. thanks for the info.

The HR20-100 has an external antenna for an RF remote, but apparently this is less sensitive than the -700 with an internal antenna.
