I am looking at the channel guide and see no stations like WGN,WPIX KTLA, etc which I could get with *E* ala Carte.

Are these WB or CW super stations or whatever they are called now available on *D*?

WB network went out of business on August 31, 2007. DirecTV carries the local CW affiliate in markets that have one in the LIL package. If your area does not, then Baltimore's CW affiliate is available as a "distant local". WGN is on DirecTV 307.

No the Supers have never been on D except for maybe the local area in their city. Dont expect the Supers on D anytime soon-sorry-Max.

No. DirecTV does not offer WPIX except to people in the NYC area. Same with KTLA, it is only available to viewers in the LA area.

Further, the WGN on DirecTV nationally does not have CW programming. It substitutes an old movie in the 8-10 ET slot.

If there is no CW station in your local area, you can get WNUV in Baltimore on Channel 385. There is a program on the website that will tell you if you are eligiable based on your zip code.

I remember being in school when I was watching that network-shut-down-marathon.

But it would really be nice if we could get KTLA-HD out here. Such a quality station. It should definitely be the network flagship.

Wow - do you remember the old E* vs D* "wars" over superstations back in 1997-ish? We've come a long way!

KTLA is an excellent station, and a pioneer in HD... I think they were the first station in the LA market to broadcast in HD. That being said, I'm not quite sure I'd call them a superstation. I'd reserve that term for stations that program to a national audience.

That's the one station I missed most, when I switched from Dish to Direct, and still do. I wish we could get all of them. I rarely look at WGN or TBS locally, but always enjoyed KTLA and the Boston and NYC super stations.

DOes Dish have some kind of lock on them that Direct can't get them, or is it Direct just doesn't want them?

Getting the Superstations in HD on D* (KTLA, WPIX, WWOR, etc.) would be nice.

Given that they don't even carry them in SD version.

Getting them in HD is a stretch.

WGN-HD is probably the first one we will see...
But I don't forsee a large increase in Superstation carriage...

Does anyone have a link on what makes a channel a "superstation"?

E* has no exclusive on the superstations, D* could offer the package on a national level if they wish, but never did and probably never will.

And FTR - TBS and WGN are NOT superstations. WPIX, KTLA, KWGN, WWOR and WSBK are the only true superstations.

Basically a local channel that is distributed via cable or satellite to other markets nationwide. Or as the FCC defines it "A television broadcast station, other than a network station, licensed by the FCC that is secondarily transmitted by a satellite carrier."

As I said above WPIX, KTLA, KWGN, WWOR and WSBK are the only superstations, and are grandfathered in. There will never be any more unless the FCC reverses their own ruling. The WGN and TBS we get on satellite and cable are cable feeds, not WGN 9 from Chicago or WTBS 17 from Atlanta, so they are no longer superstations.

That is intresting... given that WGN Chicago and WGN Superstation are often not showing the same thing.

It is basically a "cable" channel WGN Superstation that sometimes plays the same content as the local version

That's the whole reason they're not superstations anymore. WPIX on channel 234 on E* is the exact same thing as you would get OTA on channel 11 in NYC. KTLA is the exact same thing as you would get OTA on channel 5 in the LA area and so on. And anyone in the country can order this package. WGN on channel 239 (or 307 on D*) on Dish, is very different then what you'd get on channel 9 in Chicago as you know.

Being in Chicago, not sure if you know this but 10 years ago WGN National was very similar to WGN Chicago, they carried Kids WB in the afternoons, WB Primetime in the evenings, then it was dropped in 2000 I think. WGN National never aired the WGN Morning News, but did carry the News at Noon and 10PM News. The two feeds were never as close to how TBS and WTBS are, but they used to be a lot more inline with each other then they are now.

It probably dropped the same time the became the WB affiliate.
And honestly, if it wasn't for the CUBS... they probably wouldn't be carried by most other carriers.

I know it was nice in Hawaii to watch the 9pm news during lunch though...

From the Wikipedia entry, it sounds like the WGN 9 feed had poor terrestrial coverage but when the signal range improved the WB Programming stopped. The odd thing was WB Primetime and Kids WB were not dropped from WGN National at the same time, one went months before the other.

"Another major programming difference between the national and local Chicago feeds is that Superstation WGN does not carry CW Network programming (which does appear on the Chicago feed), as that network is available in most markets around the country. The superstation feed did carry programming from the former WB Network nationwide (which Tribune had an ownership interest in) from the network's launch in 1995 until 1999, when local station coverage was deemed sufficient enough by Time Warner and Tribune to discontinue airing The WB on the superstation feed."

SHVERA ACtually lists the superstations and the criteria for selection. KTLA meets the criteria and is named as a superstation.
