HR20-700 HDMI out no longer working

I recently have run into a problem with the HDMI out on my Hr20-700. Whenever the HDMI out is connected to any display (projector, A/V receiver) there is no video output, the audio cuts and drops out (optical) and the picture on component output goes black every 5 seconds.

I've tried different HDMI cables, and in this same setup a few months ago the HDMI out was working. I've tried disconnected everything and just running the HDMI cable to the projector - still no video.

I called Directv, and they gave me the indication that a software update caused this problem and that they are looking into it, but there is no solution.

I take what they said with a grain of salt and have a feeling i've got a defective unit. Any suggestions?

If you have a friend with an HR20-700 with the same software version who'd let you borrow his receiver, you could prove or disprove that theory. That would take a real friend, with all the cabling that needs connecting and re-connecting! I'm somewhat suspicious of the answer you received. I would think if a software update had disabled a brand of TV or A/V receiver's HDMI connection, we would have heard more about it.

You could perhaps more easily take your HR20 to someone else's house with an HDTV and DirecTV service and test your receiver's HDMI output there. If you've got a small UPS, they wouldn't even need DirecTV service. Just take the HR with you while it's running on the UPS and play a recording. Remember, you'd be transporting a spinning hard drive.....
