View Full Version : Splitters (NO SWM) - what problems to expect?

I'm more curious than anything else.

I have a location where there used to be a TiVo Series 2 Dual Tuner(Cable TV). I definitely remember installing a small splitter behind the entertainment unit in order to have one line going to a cable box and the other directly to the TiVo. I got rid of cable a long time ago and had been using a stand alone Tivo there (OTA) for some time. This weekend I replaced the SA Tivo and put an HR20 in this location. As I was doing this I noticed the second coax cable in the Entertainment unit and after scratching my head for a few minutes (there is only one cable run to this location) I remembered the splitter. The Ent unit is extremely heavy and I would have to pull it out to get at the the cables (and splitter). Since I had already connected the HR20 and it was booting up I decided to wait and see what happened. It started up just fine with no signal or channel changing issues.

So I was wondering... is the splitter not attached any more (since it works) or is it OK (I'm sure not recommended though) to have a splitter so long as only one line coming off the splitter is connected to something?

So long as the other end of the splitter is not connected to anything....
You shouldn't see any issues.

You really don't want a splitter in line. If only one end is connected, all you've done is add more loss in the line. If you were ever to connect the other port of the splitter, then you would end up with more problems.

Thank you both - this is what I suspected. If it wasn't for the huge PITA of moving the Ent Center to remove the splitter I would.
