Hello,
I have tried to find the answer to this question, and although it's been asked before, none of the specific situations I could find are similar to mine.
We just installed the new RCA hi def dvr from Directv. We used to have the Directv Tivo. With our old Directv Tivo dvr we were able to use the rf output to connect a cable to the kitchen tv so I could watch what everybody else was watching when I am in the kitchen. Now we are trying to set up the new system and find there is no RF connection on the new dvr. The kitchen tv doesn't have an "s" video connection and even if it did-- I'm not sure if we can split the "s" connection anyway. Is it possible to find some adapter or connector or some widget that can connect these an rf tv to a new hi def Directv DVR?
Thanks in advance.
Socal

I guess you can buy an "rf modulator" which uses the RCA plugs in and a coax out. Radioshack's have 'em.

Thanks Mertzen. I was at Radio Shack twice today and they said they didn't have anything that would do that. Grrrrr.

What model DVR do you have? The only new DirecTV HD DVRs that are currently available are the HR20 and HR21.
I'm not aware of an RCA model that works with the new HD channels.
Once we know what model you have, then we can look up the outputs and give you some suggestions.
Also, are you trying to view the output on HDTVs, or older analog?

Hi Kansas, Thanks for the reply. On the Directv website under my account it says I have an RCA receiver? HUH? On the bottom of my dvr it says HR-21, so I guess i have one of those.
I have a small flat panel tv that is about 2-years old in my kitchen. It was connected to the Directv Tivo via the rf connector, but the new dvr doesn't have rf connector on it.
Thanks!
This should do the job, and is Radio Shack. Similar devices are available at Best Buy, Circuit City, and other TV sales stores.

Does the flat panel have a yellow video rca input with red and white audio inputs?

Is that your "main" TV, or the one in the kitchen you are trying to add?

My main tv is a brand new Sony 60" SXRD projection tv. The little one in the kitchen is one that I watch while I'm cooking. It will share the same feed as the big one. I don't need a receiver on it or anything like that!!
Thanks.

We need to know ALL of the inputs on the kitchen TV, please.
Plus, how is the HR21 connected to the Sony?

Ok--- I'll try to give you all the information you need. I am very new to all this and I'm technically challenged, but if I can get enough info from you all I will explain to my husband!!!
The sony is connected to the hr21
In the kitchen there is a connector in the wall that used to connect the tv to the tivo dvr-- it is a coaxial connection (or RF, if I am not mistaken). The tv in the kitchen has several connectors in it including s-video, coaxial and component. So somehow I need to connect all these things together. It used to be easy when it was simply coax to coax. I hope this is enough information for you.
Thanks!!

go to the link that CARL6 left at 5:08 p.m. to radioshack and read the page then you can hook that up behind your hr21 run the yellow white and red from the hr21 and connect them to the modulator then hook the coax from the modulator to the wall outlet that goes to the flat panel in the kitchen.

Akhicks-- thanks for the info. I will give that a try. I wonder why the guy at Radio Shack told us they don't have anything that would help us. We went there TWICE and looked at everything we could see and the guy said nothing goes to coax. Ugh, what a dummy. He even checked online. I thought those people were supposed to be well trained. Ugh.
Happy New Year.

"Radio Shack" and "well trained" should never be used in the same sentence. :nono:

Mike I guess I learned the hard way. I am getting so disgusted with customer service these days. Everywhere I go people don't know what they're doing or if they do-- then they don't want to do it. UGH.

ps. Thanks everybody, we got the second tv working. The technology has changed so much in the past few years. We can't keep up with so many cables and hookups etc.
I appreciate your posts!!!

When you talk to the guy at Radio Shack, don't say anything about connecting a DirecTV receiver to the TV in the kitchen. Tell them that you want to connect a DVD player to a TV that doesn't have input jacks. That is the primary reason that RF modulators are used for (and how Radio Shack has always advertised them).

I have a 17"WS lcd hooked up this way, works good.

I knew I couldn't be the only person on the planet with this problem. The guy at Radio Shack was baffled-- he couldn't figure out how we could possibly accomplish this. You people are awesome. YAY!!! Now onto wiring the surround sound :-(
I miss my black and white tv, with the rabbit ears. Those were the days. I'm only 47 but I feel like I'm 100 sometimes. Anybody here remember when they got their first color tv??? Wow -- that was amazing. My husband thanks you all too. You saved a bunch of his braincells.

I can remember the first time I saw ANY television (before ever having one in our house). It was the size of a refrigerator and had a 6" round picture tube. I can also remember the first color tv I ever saw - some friends of my parents bought one and we went over there on new years day to watch the Rose Parade in color (pretty lousy color too, as I recall). The very first TV would have been in the early 50's, maybe 1951 or 1952. The first color TV would have been in the late 50's sometime.

Carl I guess we were poor because I don't think we had a color tv till the late 60s!
