I currently have the HR20 and three SD Tivo DVRs on my account. My HR20 was upgraded for free about 6 months ago.

What will DTV charge me if I want to upgrade the three SD Tivos to the HR20s? It just seem so much easier if all the 4 DVRs in my home use the same menu/interface.

Anywhere from $0 to $299 each. Only the CSR that is taking your order can give you a real price that you will pay.

Since it's been 6 months, you might be able to get a good discount on one of them, but expect to pay $299 for at least the other 2.

One of the three Tivos has just died last week. Its hard drive started making a loud screeeeching sound that scared my cats and dogs out of the house, then it just stopped working completely two days later. This is why I'm thinking about replacing all of them together. All of them are leased. Will DirecTV expect me to return a working Tivo, if I get a good upgrade deal for HR20's?(or most likely HR21's)?

Most likely they'll replace your old SD Tivos with R15 SD DVRs, not HD DVRs. But you might get a sweet deal if you ask nicely :)

And no, they probably won't want those old SD Tivos back (most likely they're not leased anyway so you own them outright).

I called DTV this morning and told the rep exactly what I wanted. She informed me that all of my SD Tivo DVRs, as well as the one HR20, are leased. Since one was already dead, she replaced it under the protection plan, but instead of the R15, she ordered me a HR21.(no more HR20, obviously) The remaning two SD Tivo DVRs were upgraded to two HR21s, at $99 for both, plus the usual $20 shipping. I did have to agree to stay with DTV for another two year, which was fine by me.

So... the net cost to upgrade three SD Tivo to HR21s is about $120. Not too bad.

After I hung up the phone, I realized I made a mistake... I could have gotten all three for $0 if I just told her that all three SD Tivos are dead! :D (edit: I just realized how unethical this sounds :D )

That's still a pretty sweet deal. Enjoy!

I have one HR10 left. It is leased. When I bought it on Ebay a few years ago the CSR said "look at it this way", with a "lease" it will NEVER cost you more than $19.99 to replace it. Recently I discussed this with a CSR , hypothetically, my HR10 breaks. She said yes, $19.99 , BUT, AFTER $70 service call to verify it needs replaced, not just my saying so.
You may also remember we were supposed to get legacy stuff replaced for free a couple of years back.

No, I don't remember that.

That's what the protection plan fee is for.... :D

I've had DTV receivers and SD & HD DVRs break before. DTV never required any technician visit to verify it. DTV just send out a replacement DVR and a return FedEx label. I just put the dead DVR inside the box and have FedEx pick it up...

IMHO, nice deal.

And you have a clear conscious as well.

FWIW, I had bought my own HR20 at Best Buy when they still had them since I could not get DirecTV to just send me my 'free upgrade' as they insisted on an installer do it even though I already had the 5 LNB dish. Anyway, I e-mailed them a gripe letter after that and they replied that they would go ahead and send me one if I called back (perhaps because the one I bought was up and running). So I called and not only got the the unit for free, they knocked $10 a month off my bill for 12 months. :) So anyway, I was waiting on my DVR fully expecting an HR21 (which would have been ok). But I did get a refurb HR20. This was just 2 days ago, so they still do have them. I don't know why I managed to get one when I never asked for that specific model. Of course I'm not complaining either. :) Anyway, my point is there are still some HR20s in the system even if they are refurbs. Guess it's just a crap shoot on what you get.
