View Full Version : Has anyone installed Internet Explorer 6?
I just installed it. It seems to run as good as 5 if not slightly faster. No problems yet.
Iv been thinking about installing it. What is the file size? I downloaded IE 4 when it first came out and it took me 5 hours to down load on a 28k Mwave modem.
Steve
On a dialup modem, it would take a long time. The file size is about 20MB for the full install. 10MB for the minimum.
It took me about 3 hours to download and install over 33.6 Friday night. So far, I like it - seems faster loading than 5.5 was.
It seems like Outlook Express 6 loads quicker. IE? ummm.... maybe, but I can't really tell.
Doesn't really seem to be any new features, but the picture toolbar and media button. Maybe there's more behind-the- scenes improvements.
I wouldn't rush to download, it might be better to wait for the first batch of security fixes to come out. ;)
BTW, just a couple minutes download with a cable modem
Ive been running it for a while on one of my machines (with Windows XP Betas) and have installed the release version of IE 6 on another machine. Not really much to different.

I have installed it on 2 machines and it does appear to be faster than IE 5, but its nothing to brag about in terms of appearance, etc. The download was about an hour and 45 minutes. If you dont want the wait, you can get the CD from Microsoft; let a friend burn you a complete full version of IE 6 on CD; or upgrade to Windows XP..which has a slightly better looking version of IE6 than the one available for download today.
One note for Windows 95 users: If you want to upgrade to IE6...you need to upgrade to Win98 ( download/install IE6); Win 2000 (Download/Install IE 6); WinME (Download/install IE6); or WinXP (IE6 is the browser included with Windows XP. MS has even included the option of uninstalling IE6, so if you want to just surf with Opera, Netscape, or even your own 'built from scratch' browser, you can do that).
Microsoft has said that IE6 is NOT compatible with Windows 95, so the choice is up to you.
Well, I've been playing around with IE6 all day and I must say I like it. It's definitely faster than IE5. Outlook Express seems to work a little faster too and loads faster.
So far I'm pleased.
JB: I know what you mean. The download only took me about a minute and a half with my cable modem. High speed access is the only way to go!
It takes a little over an hour on a 56k modem for a fairly typical install. Well worth it. It doesn't really deserve a full 6.0, but it is much more stable, and it has nice cookie management
MS has stated that after 12/01 they will not make it a priority to develop any software that supports WIN95 and support for WIN98 will end in mid2003. I wouldnt be too suprised in 2004 if they stop supporting ME and continue with XP for the next few years.
Steve
I would expect 98 and Me support to end at the same time, since there is nothing critical to software support in 98 that's not in Me
It seems any product over 5 years old will be impossible to get support for (not just MS, but IBM and a few other vendors). Can't say I blame them in that it is hard to support too many version of the software.
But those who do not upgrade machines every 5 years or so will be left in the lurch. My old 6 year old P90 (with 256MB RAM!!!) is still floating around as it has been passed to a friend, then to that friend's cousin, then the Cousin's parents. But then again, for $600 you can get a nice entry level Dell (PIII/900) that is 10 times better than that old P90 in every category. :)
I had problems with my McAfee VirusScan software lurching after I installed IE6. The WebScan components bomb.
Im downloading IE6 right now so I have only 22 minutes left to go. The complete file size is 15.8MB, Im surprised it only took (or taking) 2 hours to download. I went to custon download and chose IE6, OE6 and a few other things.
I'll let ya now what I think of it when its done.
Steve
Well I got an error messege with 12 minutes left to go saying something like 'unable to download the required components' I'll try again tommorrow.
I went back and tried it again and it was a success. Web pages do seem to load a lot faster with IE 6.
Steve
On a PII/450 with 256MB Ram? That is the machine I have at home (With Win9:cool: and a similar one at work (With W2K) . Don't want to install it if it requires a powerhouse?
I have it on a PIII/1000 with 512MB of ram running W2K and it is nice, but didn't want to take that as my example :)
Typed in (Win98 ) but without the space and ended up with a
It should run pretty good on a 450, and you have plenty of RAM. Id say go for it, as youve probably seen web pages load faster and the programs (IE&OE) starts up faster. This has become my new favorite browser. I liked Communicator 4.6, but I noticed a lot of bugs. Netscape 6 & 6.0x suck, too much like AOL, IMO. Ever since AOL bought out Netscape they went down hill. I dont even have Netscape installed on my system anymore. I used Netscape 6 beta and I just dont like the interface and style. Anyone know if Netscape 6 supports 'scroll mouses'. In the beta version you had to enable some options, that didnt work well, if I remember correctly.

Because the Bank I was using required 128-Bit web browser and for a little while I could only find IE in 56-Bit version. But now that I have 128-Bit IE 5.5 I never use Netscape 4.6. I had downloaded Netscape 6.0 at work and I had yet to have it run properly. That got uninstalled pretty quickly :D
I have Netscape 4.7 on all my computers now and like it, and I have stopped at IE 5, (old computers, one of these days I have to start over new, its not worth upgrading them anymore). I do have to agree with the comments about cable modems being the way to go with downloads. Other factors can slow down ordinary page downloads to much the same speed as dial-ups, but man, I love two and three minute software downloads. I think the longest a download has taken me in the past 2 months is nine minutes.
I installed IE6 and now when I go to a webpage, my computer goes into a temporary lock down (for about 10 seconds) while the site loads. It does that for each page I go to. And when I go to Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs It doesn't give me a choice to uninstall IE6. When I select it and hit "Add/Remove" I get two options. "Add a coponet" or "Repair Internet Explorer." I really want to uninstall this and go to IE5.5 but I don't know how. Can someone help?
You have to reinstall IE55 on top of IE6.
I guess I'm in the minority...I didn't like IE6 at all. I didn't like the little pictures that are merely a way to make Microsoft look AOLish. And I missed my old Outlook Express 5 which I liked alot. My IE6 wasn't faster for me at all. It took a long time just to load and connecting to the net.
To restore my IE5.5 and Outlook Express, I copied files that were dear to me and erased and re-initiated my entire hard drive, which offered a lot of good benefits to me, because for whatever reason, over time different media and audio players were getting real buggy.
Today everything works PERFECT and FAST again, and I don't download and save every item I even find distantly interesting.
I've installed IE6 on several machines but each with 400MHz or higher CPU and 256MB of RAM or higher and not had any problems (on 98 and W2KPro). It could be the IE6 is a resource hog and if you have a slower CPU or less memory it isn't a good fit (don't know what MS gives as the mimimum requirements for IE6, but I always double it to avoid problems)
but I always double it to avoid problems
Thats great advice!
Microsoft's system requirements for IE6 are listed as Windows 98 or better, 486/66 (Pentium recommended), 16 meg of RAM with Win 98. Pretty minimum requirements. Since I posted on this thread some time back I now have IE6 installed on 2 machines, a 133MHz with 80 meg of memory and a 200MHz MMX with 128 meg of RAM. Both are running just fine with IE6.
Maybe it was one to many "Class Action Suits" but lately system requirements are more realisitic, but in the early days of Windows those who believed the requirements usually got burned. Kind of a "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me" syndrome.
Nothing like having to fight management in order to get more memory or drive space or faster CPUs because they discount your live experience in favor of what was on the side of the box. Of course the Side of the box saved money so the bean counters loved what the side of the box said.
I guess I should get my head into 2002, but it is nice justifying a P4 2.2 GHz with 512MB and an 80GB drive because of my "Double it" system specs Mentality :D
