View Full Version : Anyone run into this problem with RealPlayer and QuickTime

Have a Dell Dimension 4100 (1000MHz, 512MB Ram) running W2K (with all patches and service packs applied based on IE Windows Update/Product Updates, I have updated everything so when the update screen comes up it shows nothing to apply). Running IE 6.

Using latest version of Quicktime and RealPlayer When run the test file and any access to Real or QuickTime media files they play at like 2x the normal speed they should (media sounds like Alvin and the Chipmunks and the video is just as fast)

Never used this machine to view these type of files before upgrade to IE6 so don't know it if was working properly before all patches were applied.

Anyone have a similar experience or insight. Knowledgebases at MS, Apple and Real didn't give any help (based on queries I had entered, query logic not always same from one KB to the other)

I used Real Player to play some MP3s and every thing worked fine.

Looks like the SoundMax (integrated sound card on dell 4100) drivers were overwritten by a similar Intel Sound card driver when installing W2K SP2 (or one of the hot fixes).

When I downloaded the latest driver from Dell (which happened to be the one I was using to begin with) and installed it, the problem went away. My typical installation process was

1) Install OS
2) Install Custom drivers not included in OS
3) Install SP2
4) Install Hot Fixes
5) Install IE6
6) Install Media Player 7, etc.

I believe if I swap steps 2&3 there shouldn't be a problem. But then again I could add Step 7 (Reinstall Sound Drivers)

Dell had no idea what the problem was, MS had no idea what the problem was, this was strictly 14 years of PC tech support in action :D

I experienced exactly the same problem with all media players - I reinstalled the AD1885 drivers for my Optiplex AFTER installing W2K SP2, and hey-presto, all ok. Nothing on Dell's site or Microsoft's site re this.

WELL DONE!
