View Full Version : This Directv stuff is addictive!
So, in 2000 I bought a Sony Tivo. It's still in use with an upgraded hard drive, but we rarely watch it anymore.
I also have a Sage PC with a 2 TB Raid5 which is basically a DVD media server and basic cable dvr (Plus locals in HD via the HD HomeRun).
Last week I got Directv, and there's so much stuff I want to watch, I think I'm going out of control here! I bought a 2nd HR21-700 (new "lease" off of ebay) for $219 and a 1 TB drive and external eSata case. This will pair up nicely with my current HR21-700 and 750GB external.
Plus I bought the NBA League pass.
SOMEONE HELP ME!
I was with cable for way too long. Other than a few stretched out HD channels (Like Animal Planet and History HD) I'm pretty pleased with Directv so far. This is just the shot in the arm I needed TV-wise for these cold winter months.
It should be warm in the spring when I cancel the "HD Extra Pack" and the premium movie channels!
Thanks, Directv!:)

I'll see your five and raise you three more - plus throw in my 3 SD DVRs to boot!
So, I have a MX-600 URC and a URC-250 (RF to IR switcher) and all my boxes in the basement feeding 3 TV's (Active Matrix switcher). I also use a cheap radio shack "triangle" IR repeater that helps for some of my other components.
How do you guys control multiple similar boxes in a rack with a single learning remote? I'm thinking about turning one box around or something, as the tiny IR blaster I have stuck to the front of my 1st HR21-700 I'm afraid will "bleed" over into the 2nd HR21-700. Or perhaps I should just place something flat and thick between the two that overhangs between both units somewhat?
Please don't tell me you guys use multiple remotes if you have multiple DVR's in the same room...?:nono:

I have 6 HR20s and an HR21 hooked up to the same HDTV. My solution? I stopped at a local junk store (Axman Surplus) and picked up a handful of ... metal pieces. They are about an inch and a half wide and have a 90 degree bend near the middle, with about 1 1/2 inches on one side and a little over 2 inches on the other. I place these on top of the DVRs covering the sensor and just slide them to the side to either uncover or cover as needed. Not at all high-tech, but does the job for me. Easiest solution I could think of with so many in the same place. And I only need to use one RC34 remote to control the whole deal.
Add to that the HR10-250, SDDVR80 and three Series 2 Stand Alone TiVos (I use separate remotes for each - I HATE universal remotes) and I'm good to go!

Oh, if you notice I'm not using the Directv remote(s). Using a URC MX-650...and pure RF for the HR21-700's....

I love GOOD universal remotes, like the URC ones. Swear by 'em. To me nothing is more annoying than having a coffee table or bedroom with a zillion remotes lying around.
Thank you so much for the idea about the metal piece! I have just the thing you mentioned lying around somewhere out in the garage (almost like a hinge but a solid 90 degree angle) that'll work perfectly.

That's obviously a different story then.

I'm with you on that point. I spent a chunck of $$$ on a color touch screen programmable (and "code-learning") remote that can handle up to 1400 macro commands. At the time, I really thought it was overkill.
Not that I have successfully (and easily) updated it over and over for years now with numerous new new devices in my equipment rack...I feel really pleased I made the right choice.

You must have a dedicated 20 amp circuit for your entertainment system. Maybe 2 circuits?

All I can say is wow. Good luck with that.
This is confusing me.... Why would someone need 6 receivers connected to the same TV????

Dayum!
I thought I was bad. HR20, (4)H20 and an SD TIVO...but hooked to a total of 5 TV's seemed quite an overkill.
But 6 DVR's hooked to 1 TV seems...well a little insane to me.

No kidding.
I have 2 HD receivers and 3 HD DVR's and my family has no problem watching almost anything almost any time.
All the toys also help for testing time...and it makes things entertaining for my wife watching me scramble like a rodent on CE nights... :D
Is there such a thing as too much HD?
Boy...am I the wrong person to ask....

We have an H20, 2 R15's, and a couple of standard receivers lying about somewheres not active. I will get an HR2? soon, and can not WAIT! So ready to have the recording on the TV we now watch the most.
My husband is definately addicted - me - I watch MY shows, and other times I would rather be playing Guitar Hero III or chatting online.

DirecTV has made me a sports addict
I used to watch some baseball but now that I get MLBEI games in HD, I watched more than ever
I watched more college football this year due to so many games being in HD whether ESPN or local feeds found on D*
I watch all the golf I can find on HD

I could stand to lose a few pounds, I do get some exercise (and no, not just going to the fridge! :)), could definitely stand to do more. Plus, I never said I that everything I watch was necessarily good TV. My tastes are very similar to a lot of people and at the same time really quite different than some people. I watch things that I enjoy.
