When officials at Time Warner Cable and Fox Sports Net North were unable to come to an agreement on a new contract by Jan. 1, the all-sports network disappeared from the cable system's channel lineup.
At least that was supposed to be the case.
Turns out approximately 4,500 Time Warner customers in New Ulm, Minn., have continued to receive Fox Sports Net North.
So what gives? It depends on who you ask.
"We have not done anything anywhere to interrupt Fox Sports Net's transmission," said Eric Brown, the division president of Time Warner Cable, Minnesota. "As to why it's on in New Ulm and not Minneapolis, we couldn't tell you. We haven't done anything to affect the signal."
According to an industry source, service of the signal was interrupted to most of the 180,000 Time Warner subscribers who received FSN, but for technical reasons Fox has not been able to stop the transmission to New Ulm customers and Time Warner officials aren't about to help.
This is especially true because Time Warner faces competition in New Ulm from another cable company, New Ulm Telecom.
Thomas Tyrer, senior vice president of corporate communications for the Fox Cable Networks Group & Fox Television Studios, said company officials learned of the situation Friday.
Not surprisingly, they aren't pleased and plan to look into it this week. "We have no idea how Time Warner is getting Fox Sports Net, but I can tell you it's not through any legitimate means," Tyrer said. "We can only conclude it is piracy."
