View Full Version : Make 508 PVR work with model 6000 HDTV?

I want to somehow input the component signal out of the 6000 to the HD on the 508? How? Is it possible to use the 508 as a middle man and record full time whatever channel the 6000 is on as a PVR? I need to pass through back to my HDTV in component mode though.
Help..any ideas or suggestions? I own both receivers now and hate the wait on the 921 and hate the waste of a 508 collecting dust right now.

Sorry to say, but there is no way to do what you want. The 508 will only record what comes in on it's satellite coax line. I have both as well (well a 501 but...) and record all of the SD material that I want to watch on my 501 and just watch all of the HD material on my 6000. If you're looking to record the HD material, then you have 2 options - wait for the 921 to come our, or build a computer with a HD recording card and A LOT of disk space. That's also what I've done.

Thanks Mark...I am looking in to building a computer with a capture card. Do you know any specific models that offer component level inputs and component outputs to pass through the signal and record to my hard drive? I have been up many a nights looking all over and so far only can "probably" convert the component output of the 6000 to SVideo and input that way...but now the only place selling the adapter is out of stock with a discontinued status. Any ideas? The new ATI Radeon 9700 Pro looks nice but no component inputs.....only SVideo just like the Nvidia Personal Cinema.

The ONLY card that I've ever seen that has component inputs is the holo3dgraph capture card that runs $900 and is available from one of the AVSForums members.
Why do you need component capture so much? Granted component video does look better than svideo, but if you're talking about standard definition material, the difference isn't that great. And if you're talking about high definition material, then you need a high definition capture card, not a standard def capture card.
What exactly do you want to do? I.e. what do you want to be able to record, and what do you want to be able to do with those recordings once they're recorded?

I would be happy just to have them on my hard drive to view later or capture live feeds. I need the component feed to get the best picture since the upconversion on the 6000 is so good only through the component outputs and not the svideo. I leave it in HD mode all the time. The artifacts are almost gone with the 6000 through the component outputs. I have a Sony XBR 3500.00 TV which preaches "near HD quality upconversion" but without the "Enhanced HD Adapter" that came with the 6000, the picture looks like crap.
Dang...It looks like I'll have to wait for the 921. I heard it has a price of about $1995 and you KNOW the exisiting subscribers will pay the most for them under contract now. I'll wait for six more months and then go DirecTV and get a better deal if available or cancel and resubscribe to Dish under a new contract with the 921.
