My Cat Hates the HR20 ;^)

For the short time I had an HR21, my cat was in heaven. A quick look at the system info would tell me the box had an internal temp of around 115-118F when turned on. The cat made it a habit of jumping up and sleeping on the warm surface while we watched TV.

Since I got D* to replace the HR21 for an HR20, since I have an antenna and I like to use it, the internal temp of the HR20 is right around 93F. That just doesn't seem to be warm enough for the cat.

What is the HR21 doing under the hood that would make it run 22F hotter?

Also, I've seen the pics of the OTA resolution for the HR21, and I have to ask: if there are ATSC tuners out there the size of a USB thumb drive, why does D* have to make one the size of a slim cable box?

From everything I have heard, they are essentially the same, just two different maufacturers. Now the HR20-700's are a little further along in the maturity cycle and are getting the features and options a little more quickly. From reading all of the posts I havent seen any noticeable difference other than being slightly behind in terms of the Cutting Edge Program.

Well thats something I cant help with. We moved 16 months ago and due to remodeling I havent really got the Home Theater hooked back up yet. Very soon though. I am, however extremely happy with the HR20's.

I know how that is... we've been renovating a home for the last 18 months. I haven't even hooked up the rear speakers for the 5.1 sound because running cable in a 1942 brick bungalow with a finished basement is Difficult (that's a capital D).

Well I think I can one up you there. My house had a completely unfinished basement. I had wide open access to the walls to run the speaker wire from beneath, I completely finashed the basement this summer and fall and completely forgot to run the speaker wire. Now I have to life the carpet and run it and then pay to have someone come and reinstall the carpet. What a marooon! :confused: As looney tunes used to say.

I have to wait for my wife to be out of the house for an afternoon, and then the speaker wire and cat5 will get their runs finished... it just may take more plaster dust and drilling than I think she can stand.

Since Oct. I have had 2 HR20-100 and 1 HR-20-700. The 700 ran at 127 degrees consistently before i installed a laptop fan, which brought down the temp to around 105. The 100s have run at around 98-101 without the added fan. One of the differences between the 2 manf. is the 100 has an exhaust fan on the bottom of the unit and no vent slots on top.

It's funny no one commented that with the cat sleeping on the top of the DVR blocking the vents that it's gonna get warmer and might even overheat.

The HR21 doesn't have vents on the top, only the sides. It still seems like a cat sleeping on top would hinder heat dissipation though, doesn't it?

I checked and confirm my HR20-100 is over 110 and would like to know what is different (but mine is in a cabinet which may account for the difference).

Answering some of your questions

The HR20-100 has a slightly larger Hard Drive than the 700 but as stated the software is a few months behind. Overall I would say you did well getting a 100.

The Cat sleeping on top of the receiver will not only increase the internal temp but also shed tons of cat hair into the internal fans and eventualy cause it to clog up and stop. Also from my days doing repair work I can tell you that cat hair tends to matt itself onto the circuit boards and play havok with the electronics during times of high humidity.

That's very odd... All of my HR20's are clearly hotter than my HR21, with the HR20-100 being the cooler of the HR20's.

I think you mean HR20-100s. There is no such thing as HR21-100s. There is only HR21-700 model.
