I'm connecting my network today and I'm wondering if it's considered wired or wireless. I'm thinking wired because I'm connecting my wireless router in a room down the hall to the HR20-700 via the ethernet cable. Am I correct in calling this wired? Sorry about the stupid question but I'm new at this stuff.
Just a recap. My laptop is in an office down the hall and it's connected to a Linksys Wireless router. I'll be running my Cat6 Ethernet cable from the Linksys Wireless router to the HR20DVR. Then proceeding to download the proper software so the computer can share files with the DVR.
Thx.

I think if your laptop is using WiFI then the correct set up is wireless, even if the HR-20 is hard wired to the Router.

It's wired if you are using a physical cable to connect it to your router...

When you run the network setup on the HR 20 try wired first if no connection is made try wireless. Getting the laptop to see and communicate with the HR 20 requires WMP 11. If you are only using it for DOD then it does not matter if you set it up for media sharing.

"When you run the network setup on the HR 20 try wired first if no connection is made try wireless"
Huh? There is no wireless adapter in the HR20 nor is wireless setup an option in the network set up on the HR20.
"Getting the laptop to see and communicate with the HR 20 requires WMP 11"
Or Viiv, Tversity, Nero server, etc... WMP 11 isn't the only media server out there that works with the HR20 nor is it required to share media.

I was referring to the network setup menu on the HR 20. three options - wired, wireless, and "power adapter"
There are numerous media share programs but since the original poster was new I suggested WMP 11 since it may be installed on a windows based lap top.

I'm running a windows based laptop and I'll be running a physical cable from the wireless router in the office to the HR20-700.
My understanding is that's considered "Wired" and I was told that running the cable is the most reliable connectivity.
I'm pretty clear on what type of software I have to download and that there are quite a few options to choose from.
Thx.

Sorry, don't remember seeing those options, guess I'll have to double check mine when I get home. I remember mine looking like the pictures below.

On the HR20 when you click on Network it shows Wired, Wireless or Advanced Setup.
On the HR21 when you click on Network it shows Connect Now,Advanced Setup, Restore Defaults.
I'm connecting to a HR20-700 so I think I'll start with Wired and go from there. If I don't have any luck connecting I'll try wireless.
Thx.

Wired would be the choice you want. I believe my HR20-100 shows the same options as the HR21 or if it's changed I haven't been in the set up menu recently to see the changed.

Is there one media sharing software that better than the other. I see people using WMP11, Tversity, Twonky?
I'm sort of clueless but I'm pretty sure I an download one of these and tell if it's working properly.
I mainly want to be able to download music files and be able to access them and play them through my home stereo.
Thx.

I use Tversity personally, I think it gives you more flexibility then other programs and it's fairly easy to set up. There are set up steps available on the Tversity site to config it.
There are guides here for WMP11 and Viiv I believe also.
