View Full Version : Slow Motion on the 721 Vs. 501/508

Has anyone noticed that on the 721, the slow motion skips a couple of frames while stepping forward. On the 501, it's smooth as silk and you actually see every frame. Both units though skip frames when stepping backward.

Yes, I've noticed the same thing. It can be a bit distracting .. so I hit the back skip button first to help "re-align" it to the proper frame.

I've also noticed (on 721) that from pause to 1/15th forward, you can skip quite a few frames, and usually miss what you slowed down for and have to go backwards. I haven't tried this on my 501, since I just got it this weekend.

You can't (easily) rewind an mpeg stream w/o skipping frames (you would have to buffer the last key frame and all the deltas past it) which is why skipping back does not do "true" frame by frame, whereas forward is easy.
Don't have a 721 so I can't comment on the functionality of that, but I have to admit it's quite nice on the 501.

Might as well not have the feature at all if it does not work properly, more of a hassle than anything. We should have the option of removing certain features we do not want to happen on the receiver.
The first day 168 for the 50x was released, I mentioned that the slo-mo was smoother on the 50x than on my 721, but Jacob it is not so bad that I don't want it. It needs to be touched up a little that is all, including dumping the clunky progress bar.

When you have to unpause to skip back or skip forwards or reverse or fast forward because of a feature that does not work correctly, it makes it a hassle.
While it shouldn't work this way, if you want to start slo-mo I hit pause and then frame reverse once or twice then start the slo-mo. Not hard but it shouldn't have to be done like this. The 721 team should check out the slo-mo on the 50x.
