I have looked at the help threads but am a bit confused as to what I need on my PC to hook up to my HR20-700 - NOW THAT WE CAN VIEW VIDEO FILES!!!!! (as per this latest release)
I am running Windows XP on my laptop and would like to view Video files.
I am just going to put the laptop on the HT cabinet when I am going to watch a video file and just leave the Ethernet connection hooked up in the back of the HR20.
thanks

Thanks for the links.
I'll first try the WMP. Then, if that doesn't work, onto TVersity.
P.S. After reading a few more threads, I am back to being confused.
Do I need to go through a router, or can I just connect via ethernet the HR20 right to the PC?

The HR20 needs to be connected to your home network. Thus you need a router (which creates said network). You cannot connect directly to a PC as it won't be networked that way.

Also check the network help link in my signature and look at the pdf titled, Drawing of an HR21 daisy chain hook-up.pdf, this will give you an idea of how the wired connection might look like.

I haven't tried video yet (don't even know if I have any video on my PC), but I set mine up this weekend by accident. I was playing around with WMP11 and selected the sharing option.
Turned on my HR20 and all my music and pictures were there.
Cool and effortless.

The only thing I did in that tutorial was step #10.
Didn't even do #11 (restart of HR20) and it all works.

New (and possibly stupid) question.
Does the router (which connects the HR20 and the PC) need to be plugged into the internet, or can I have it as "offline" and only using it to do this "file sharing" between the HR20 and my PC?
thanks

no you don't have to have an internet connection, you can share media with a LAN only setup

I suspect that it can be set up with a direct connection (no router), but configuration would be a bit different (manual setup, computer IP as gateway, etc.) If the computer isn't fairly new, a crossover cable would be needed.
