Why is it when you power off the IRD it still runs...never does a complete shutdown! My 508 will run for about a minute after powering off then completely shuts off! does anyone else's do this??? Is this normal?

Yes, the hard drive is doing some housekeeping tasks before it shuts down.

Similar to your computer, which takes a minute to close various programs and then power down, it closes certain files and then powers down. This is why it is important that you NEVER use a power strip as the main method of shutting down your receiver! (I'm not talking about the occasional hard reboot required when it locks up, just the day to day powering up and down of the receiver.

I don't think the 721 ever powers down. It must be on to catch the timers.

The receiver is always on in a sense, it just does not show the video coming off of the receiver, it shuts that part off when you power it off. Its left on standby.

If there gonna power off the video they need to power the harddrive down also.  its a waste of energy and wears out the harddrive faster.  Did i mention noisey cause the fan comes on from the heat coming from the harddrive being on all night :( .  Mine is in my bedroom so you can see why noise is an issue. :o

The problem is its always downloading guide data (which is stored on the Hard Drive)

Perhaps in a future release they will add a power save mode to the 721 which when you shut the unit off it goes off but will repower itself and download new guide data then power off again.

Isn't this what they did in a software release of the dishplayer after it had come out? If they do this with the dishplayer then how come do they not do this in the 721? Why not just download it once a day just like dishplayer updates at 3 am or
3 30 am at night.
