Did anyone else catch the Comcast CEO's keynote address at CES where they announced they are aiming for 1000+ (that's not a typo with an extra zero) HD "offerings" by the end of the year? They showed it on a graph next to D*'s 150 promised channels. I can only assume they are including all sorts of VOD and other such offerings in that 1000+ number but that's still pretty bold!
I saw this on G4's coverage of the show (they are owned by Comcast, so no shock there) so I don't have any kind of link to post for reference.

Those "offerings" are NOT *CHANNELS*, but On-Demand programs. Every movie and TV episode is being counted. Of course, the announcement was worded in such a way to intentionally mislead people into believing that they're talking about CHANNELS. It's called SPIN.

Hmmmm. Comcast, the people that let my internet service be down every evening and night for 13 days. They too need to fire some pr people and hire more techies.

That's REALLY funny!!! Many of their markets do not even have HD, nor do they any sort of time frame to get them online.

Yea it's really funny because they couldn't even fit 1000 SD channels on a peice of RG6.
Is there even 1000 SD channels in existence in the USA?
To be sure, Comcast's ads are confusing and misleading, but then, so are those
of Dish and Directv. It's all about 'spinning' the HD numbers.
I believe what Comcast is claiming is that, on a fully-implemented Comcast HD
VOD system, subscribers will be able to access up to 1,000 "HD programs" at
any given point in time.
Whether it's "channels" or "programs" that are important to you all depends on
ones point of view. It's all about choice and variety and having access to 1,000
HD programs from which to choose is more important to me than having 100
HD channels to watch.

I DVR'd the G4 CES programs and went back to get the exact statement from Brian Roberts, Chairman & CEO of Comcast. They had just finished demonstrating their new portable STB (kind of cool) and just before this statement a background voice said "Comcast on Demand". I swear I couldn't figure out if that was referring to what was just presented or what was about to be said.
Anyway, here's his exact quote:
"We will put over 1000 HD choices in virtually every Comcast HD home by the end of 2008. What satellite says they'll offer pales in comparison."
There was a bar graph overlay showing Directv's 100 HD channels vs. Comcast's 1000 HD channels.
What a marketing ploy this is! And many listeners will take it at face value just knowing if they have Comcast they'll get 1000 HD channels by years end. Do you think I'm wrong?
Our bickering about whether Direct or Dish has more HD channels does pale in comparison to this wild statement.

this conjures images of those free internet tv things that have hundreds of useless waist of bandwidth they call "channels" **** like that is REALLY like a glorified youtube where certain folks like to feel "special" and make their own channel

True "On Demand" is the only thing I miss about Concast. How on freakin' Earth can Dish even attempt to equate "My Recordings" to "On Demand".
Carefully analyze the difference between these statements:
1. Right now, at this moment I can choose from any one of 1,000 programs.
2. Right now, at this moment, I can choose from any one of 100 channels.
Keep in mind that we don't watch "channels", we watch "programs".
