View Full Version : How to switch between tuners when recording on both tuners?
Okay. My wife brought up a good question and I couldn't figure out an easy way to do this. Let's say, I have the HR20 recording channel 5 on one tuner and also recordig channel 75 on the other tuner, and I want to switch between these two channels (5 and 75). I'm not concerned with seeing what's in the buffer or anything or what has already been recorded. I just want to switch to live TV between these two channels (don't recall exactly but I think HR10-250 as able to do this) while they are being recorded. I'm sure there must be some way to be able to switch between the channels' live feed while its recording (again, don't care about what's in buffer and losing that). I've tried just typing in the channel to switch between but it was a no go. Say, I'm on channel 5, I type in 75 to go to channel 75 but it does not work. It brings up a screen that asks which tuner I want to stop recording on, which is odd given I asking it to switch to one of the channels it's already recording. Suggestions?
Thanks

This is the so-called "Dual Live Buffer" or DLB issue on the HR20.
There is plenty of discussion on this, but the bottom line is, this is one way in which other DVRs are easier to control than the HR20.

I'm admittedly still learning the D* DVR, so someone can probably explain better than me.
I know from the [lack of] DLB discussions that there are relatively quick ways to switch between the two. I thought you could use 'prev chan', but maybe there's a step between that I'm forgetting? I'm pretty sure I used 'prev chan' last weekend when going back and forth between one program I was recording and one I wasn't. (without keeping the live buffer of course)
I'm picking up a new HR2* over lunch to put on our primary viewing TV, so I'll be learning this stuff much more quickly in the near future (since my existing HR20 is on a TV that's not used as often).

Yea I hit list and fiind the show (usually on top) and hit play then hit resume and BOOM you are right where you left off

Thanks Shadow. I was concerned that DLB might be the issue. I had always thought about DLB in a different way than what I was looking to do, but I see how what I want to do encroaches upon that realm. Ignoring the issue of whether a buffer would exist to access, it still seems odd to me that you can't switch between the real-time live feed of each tuner as it is recording. Oh well, the HR2x is still a great DVR.

I've tried just typing in the channel to switch between but it was a no go.
I just tried this and it worked for me. I was then able to use the previous button to switch between them.
Are you sure you're not watching a secondary? For example, maybe there's 2 Channel 5's (a SD and a HD). You're recording the SD version (the second channel 5), but when you try to enter it directly by just pressing 5 on the remote, it's trying to take you to the HD version (the first channel).

Edit: Yep, I just tried it with channel 5 and woudn't work. I was recording the SD channel (and one other) and it wouldn't let me go to channel 5 directly, because it wanted to take me to the HD version.
I was able to go to the guide and select channel 5 and then I could code the second channel in directly (or could have used the guide for that too) and then toggle between them using the previous button.

I had not tried toggling using the previous button, I'll give that a try tonight. I only tried toggling by typing in the channel numbers directly. Thanks for the tip.
(Was not using channels that had HD/SD counterparts.)
