I just picked up a second HR21-700 from costco to replace my RCA DVR40
How do I get rid of the DVR40 and add the HR21?

Do I have to call (what number) or can I do it on the web (can't find a place to do it)?

Thanks
Randall

Unfortunately the option to do it online is long gone.
Give a shout to DirecTV (800-531-5000). Let them know you're activating a replacement receiver. Get it activated, then verify that your RCA is deactivated.

Thanks. Called and deactivated the old DVR and Activated the new one.
Only problem was the long hold time, otherwise pretty easy.

Do you have the 5 LNB Slimline or is it being installed? You will need it for the new MPEG-4 HD channels.

Looks like it, he mentioned in the OP it was his 2nd HR21.

Make sure that the DVR40 is not your primary receiver when it gets deactivated.

Awesome call on that. My HR10-250 was my primary and it was a pain in the rear to replace it when the time finally came. Actually it took more time to get stuff swapped over than it was a pain. My recent activity on my bill after that was all full of charges and credits from when they did it.

It was:(

They cancelled, restarted and transferred the primary to my other DVR40, not either of the new HR21's ???

Anyway everything is working.

I'm just waiting on the SWM8 to get the second tuners up and running and I'll be in business:)

Many thanks for all the helpful advice. This place rocks:)

Thanks

Glad it worked out for you. I have no idea why they wouldn't make oneof the new receivers the primary. That other DVR40 probably won't be around much longer and will have to recreate everything all over again. Makes no sense.

Hmmm... you know, if you want them to make one of your HR21s the primary you can always upgrade the DVR40. Come on, you know you want to. :D

go on your DirecTV account and change it there. it has a place where you can.

I thought they had to basically rebuild your account with the programming when they changed primary receivers. I didn't think that would be something they want done on-line. Interesting.

You can change the labels of the receivers for how they show up on the web site, but I'm 99.99% certain that to switch which receiver is designated primary requires a call. The CSR has to cancel services and reset them on the new primary receiver, so I'm sure it's not something that would be left to the customers to be able to do on the web.

Where!?!
And besides, we already know that making adjustments online can kill some services on your account by accident.

Bingo.
All the services on your account have to be cancelled, the receiver deactivated, then the services have to be re-instated onto your new card. Thats why its such a hassle, and why people often get miffed because the CSR missed a line-item or 2 so the customer is missing something
