View Full Version : swm8 and polarity locker
hey guys,
i have talked about this with a couple people and we are not real sure of the answer so i thought i would post it.
currently i have a sonora polarity locker that splits off with power passing splitters to 2 wb68s. what i want to do is get 3way splitters and add a swm8 to this setup. can i leave the sonora in place, and if so what kind of splitters do i need. OR i could buy a wb616 and one port passing splitters and just have the wb616 and the swm8 and take off the sonora. but i would rather not buy a wb616 and do it the way i first mentioned. what do you guys think.
It will be interesting to see the responses to this thread ....
Previously, had seen the following ...
With two WB68's, 2-way split with power passing on one or both sides were fine.
With two SWM8's, you needed 2-way split with power passing on only one side.
If you had a SWM then the polarity locker provided no additional benefit (since the SWM does the lock).
Hadn't seen anyone do a 3-way split.
Looking forward to see the other responses.
me too!!!!!
i know i dont need the locker if there is a powered device in line(swm8)
but if i dont need to take it out i wont. i would just like to leave it in line unless it poses a problem
I can see no reason why it wouldn't work. You would not need power passing on any of the splitter ports with the Sonora in place. Without the Sonora, put a powered device (SWM) on the power passing port.

thanks carl, do tthey make a 3 way splitter that blocks all ports
but if i kept the 2 wb68s wouldnt i just need a 3 way splitter that blocked power on one port, the port to the swm, because the wb68s are unpowered

thanks for the link, i wonder if that would be the best solution.

I have had many different combinations of WB-68's and SWM-5 and now SWM-8's.
I presently have a Sonora HRPID1422 polarity locker to 4 X 3-way all port power passing high frequency splitters then to 2 WB-68's and one SWM-8. All work fine with no issues.
I don't think the splitter power pass status matters at all with the power inserted via the HRPID1422. I think it can matter if the LNB's are getting power thru receivers and other multiswitch devices without the splitter.
I've had no issues with any combo as long as the power inserter was used.

Actually, you want the powered device on the power passing port - you want it powering the dish and not rely on the voltage from the receiver to do that.
Most splitters (unless they are specifically designed and manufactured as also being combiners) only pass the voltage in one direction. You won't get voltage feeding back through the other ports to the receivers.

i was talking about if i left the sonora on there

It won't matter then. The sonora has dc blocking capacitors on the outputs.
Carl
so should i just use 3 way splitters with all passive ports
