Looking at a HR20 on eBay, I found one that piqued my interest as it was advertised as new and available for a good price. I got the receiver ID and called DirecTV to see if it was a lease or owned receiver. What the CSR told me is that the determining factor of lease vs. purchase is when the receiver was activated for the first time. Previously, I was under the impression that it was the purchase date. This kinda makes sense though and just wonder if anyone here can confirm that?

The CSR also said that if I called to activate a new receiver (mirroring it with my existing account) that it would automatically reset my 2 year commitment? That didn't sound right, so I don't think I believe that one.

Any receiver activated after March 2006 is a leased unit unless the unit was bought through DirecTV for full price.

Activating a new receiver will reset you contract. Any advanced equipment will be 2 years and non advanced equipment is 1 year unless you are under a longer contract already.

Thanks for the confirmation, Mr. Raven :) Does it also reset my 2 year contract if I retire my HR10 and put a new HR20 in it's place?

Yes, if you activate a new HR20 your 2 year contract will reset.

vfr781rider,

And it's two years from activation date - it doesn't add two years to whatever your date is now.

And if you have an HR10 now you can probably get an HR20 upgrade for free or nearly free. You may get a better deal from DirecTV then anything you get off eBay.

Yes, that is key .. If you activated one this month and another next month, you'd still only be at 2 years, not 4 years :).
