One interesting quote

Microsoft's Windows Media 9 was also submitted to the DVD Forum and is said to have done well technically, but one source close to Mi crosoft, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, "WM9 didn't stand a chance politically."

This is an example of how Microsoft's tactics will hurt them in the long run.

Just imagine if Microsoft was used in DVD software:

You'd have to reboot your player 4 times while trying to play a DVD.
You'd have to renew your license agreement every 2 years.
"Insufficient memory to run this application".
"A critical error has just ocurred, see your System Administrator".
"A Page Fault has ocurred in Chapter 9, Sector 5".
"Blue screen of Death" for no apparent reason.
"Invalid Boot Device" & the player tries to run Scandisk.
Everytime you start your player, an annoying message pops up "An update to your software is now ready for download".
Viruses run rampant through your DVD RW disks.
And finally... DIVX here we come again.

The best system was the one supported by Time-Warner, but the big boys showed up with MPEG4 and everyone has caved, because of familiarity and politics.
