I know this seems like it should be in the joke section, but it was an honest to goodness real call.

A customer called in with a past due account balance, and told D* that she had tried to pay her bill with the credit card reader on the front of her directv Receiver , but the receiver told her that her credit card was no good.

She must not have been using a smart card. I'm pretty sure a normal credit card with just a magnetic strip won't work. :sure:

the access card reader on D* is not a credit card reader at all, but people think it is.

I thought DirecTV doesn't take credit cards to pay your bill through the receiver.

Once I fielded a call from a lady with IVAC. I asked her her access card number, and she gave me the number off of her Oklahoma Access EBT card. (It's the same thing as food stamps.)

I'm thinking "Okay, if you are on food stamps why the F&*^ do you have D*??"

People talk all the time at how bad/incompetent some CSR's are, the flip side is the same, some customers have the IQ of dryer lint.

Maybe they had a UltimateTV receiver, it does have non-supported smart-card slot in addition to the access card slot. :)

This loses something if I have to explain it. Some credit card companies are/have issued credit cards that will also work with a smart card reader, which is the same or similar to the card reader in the DTV receivers. My attempt at a joke was that only a credit card that that had this capability would work with the receiver.

Of course no credit card would actually work in the DTV receiver - it only works with the DTV access cards.

Being so reasonably priced for what you get, satellite TV may be the only enjoyment she gets out of life.

I know how you feel, however. When I was young, I would have asked that same question.

Thre is actually an ANSI (American National Standards Institute) standard for credit cards size, shape and probably how they have the number on them) and this has probably become an international standard also. Smart cards have a similar standard and at first glance probably the same size standards.

For all the access cards I've handled I never compared the size to a credit card. I gues the next time on of my receivers is off, I'll have to do so.
