I had D* back a couple of years ago and cancelled it. Of course, they left their antenna on the side of my house (it's actually on a pole right beside my house). When I just got D* again, they had to put up the newer dishes for the HD channels. It's now sitting right beside my old one.

What can I do about the old dish? Can I just take it down and put it in my garage? Throw it away? Will they come looking for it one day? I thought about charging them rent for having it on my property, but I doubt they'd pay.

a dish once installed is your dish, you can take it down, you can take the dish to a place that recycles aluminum and sell it

Once the dish is installed on your property, it becomes part of your property and responsibility - same as CATV connection. If they came back to install a new dish, they're not obligated to remove the entire assembly of the old dish (whether on the house or pole, due to liability reasons / risk of damage to property or personal injury, upon removal. If mounted on a house, it would be courteous of the technician to remove the mast and reflector of the old assembly, with the mounting bracket still attached to the house.

You can do whatever you want with dishes, upon cancellation.
