View Full Version : TyTools Dramatically Slower
I have been using TyTools for several years now. I moved over the holidays and pretty much set up my system as it was at the old house. Even using the same dish (a 1m Bell ExpressVue) and cabling.
My HDVR2 is SuperPatched (and a few other mods) at 6.2-01-2-151.
I have a Linksys USB200 dongle connected to a GB switch (same setup as before). I never really paid much attention to what my actual speeds were - but, an hour (1GB) video would come down in about 5 minutes. Now, it takes more than 30 minutes at 0.48m/s.
For trouble shooting, I have replaced the CAT5 cable (it was the original from the other house) and made a crossover cable to connect directly to the PC. All results in the same S-L-O-W transfers. I am open to any other suggestion.
And I guess it should be noted that the receiver has been rebooted (both soft and hard) multiple times.
I can telnet into the box and check any settings there, even though my knowledge of TiVo Linux is limited, and the commands may need to be spelled out for me.

Hash, you'll get better support for this sort of question in the "Tivo Underground Forum" at http://www.tivocommunity.com.

From TiVo hacks to secret codes this is where you talk about the inside underground scoop. New idea or perfecting an idea - This is the place. NOTE...No talk of any type of service theft or video extraction is allowed.
Well... I'll try...

The Tivo Community Forum is the last place you want to go with a question regarding video extraction since the topic is strictly forbidden there. I know David Bott and his band of cronies was really anal about it but it may be a more relaxed atmosphere now that the TCF is under new ownership, but I wouldn't count on it. I'd recommend asking the question at dealdatabase.com since that's where the TyTools support forum resides. Jdiner (the TyTools developer) isn't around as much as he used to be but I'm sure Jamie or one of the other old-timers can help you out.
Which drivers do you have installed? You should be using Jamie's backported drivers if you want the best throughput. Is the Tivo recording or playing back programs in the background during the transfer? If so, you may want to reschedule the transfers when you're not using the Tivo. Try changing the channels on each tuner to channels you don't actually receive, such as channel 0. The lack of a video signal will stop the tuners from buffering the video and free up the CPU. Anything running in the background will bog down the transfer rate. There's a whole thread dedicated to transfer rates at DDB.

The same "theft of service" policy applies at DBSTalk, too.
Which drivers do you have installed? You should be using Jamie's backported drivers if you want the best throughput. My assumption is that they are - as installed by the SuperPatch script. I wish I knew a way to do a version check. The best I know to provide is the date/file-size info for /lib/modules/usbcore.o - which is 28SEP05/163078.
I understand that Jamie has (relatively) recently rewritten the drivers to support (among other things) the USB200Mv2 dongle. I have considered following the procedure to update to those drivers. However, my knowledge of the "new" drivers is due solely to several posts detailing problems with them.

Anything running in the background will bog down the transfer rate.I do this anyway in an effort to reduce throughput to/from the HD platters. The Hard drive that came in these are old - and I doubt the IDE interfaces are even ATA spec. I suspect they are PIO4 or lower in performance. However, even if they were ATA-66, that is still only 33MBs through the channel in a best case scenario.
FWIW: I set the channels to 0/1 anytime I am done with the D-TiVo (night, work, outside...).
There's a whole thread dedicated to transfer rates at DDB.I haven't found it yet - but, I'll keep looking. I have seen several post discussing things like the backported drivers and re-compiling the kernel with CONFIG_FILTER and CONFIG_NETFILTER turned off. These posts were in threads not dedicated to speed issues.

Not to argue semantics - but, I pay for my DTV service. I just want to be clear on that.
Further, how can video extraction be "theft" when a dozen different types of TiVo's burn DVDs from saved content?
