John M. Devine, vice chairman and chief financial officer at General Motors, was elected to the board of directors for Hughes Electronics, parent of DirecTV.
Hughes also said that Thomas E. Everhart, who has served on the Hughes board for more than four years, is retiring. The Hughes board is comprised of 10 directors, including six independent, outside directors.
Hughes Electronics is a unit of General Motors, and Devine is one of three GM officers who sit on the company's board. He joins Jack Smith, GM chairman, and Rick Wagoner, GM president and CEO.
Hughes, which abandoned its proposed merger with EchoStar in December, is reportedly up for sale again, and the likely buyer is rumored to be News Corp. and/or Liberty Media. Any company interested in Hughes must go through GM to buy the entity.
Devine was named GM vice chairman and CFO in 2001. He has responsibility for GM's worldwide financial operations, GM asset management and its Economic Development and Enterprise Services.
