My DirecTV HD DVR is black not silver. I think its a 700- HR21 but Im not sure. My installer originally had a silver one that was dead on arrival and pulled this one out of the corner of his truck. Is this one better than an HR20? What are the differences?
Are there ways to network this with my Mac (iphoto maybe?)
-Thanks... Norm

That is the HR21. The only real difference between the silver (HR20) and the HR21 is that the HR20 can receive and record OTA brodcasts since it has an integreted Tuner. The HR21 does not so until the external tuner is released for it, it cannot receive them.
There is funtionality for music and photos but I am not up on that functionality...

Do a 'Search Forum' using the keyword Mac from the main HR20/HR21 page.
Should be able to find anything you need there.

Just to disagree with you once again because it is so much fun, There is not enough information. The first HR20-100's came in black. Sooo we will find out once the OP opens the little door and reports back.:D

ok cool Its an HR21-700. I just got an iphone and cant use the remote scheduling yet cause it requires an HR20 :( nor can I use On demand that also requires an HR20. I hope the software updates come soon.
I remember back when I had a TIVO there was a media share option that came out for windows and Mac users wanted it so bad and to this day I dont know if it was ever released. Makes me nervous...Is this HD DVR last generation or something?

It will come to the other receivers eventually...

MORE bad advice. I was told the 21 I am getting the 31st would work and I went out and bought a Lynksys etherent bridge. :nono:

The HR20-700 has all the features first because it was the first unit out and has become the testing unit if you will for testing new features. Once they get fine tuned some, they break them out to everyone. All HR20 and HR21 have the same physical abilities (if you add the AM21 to the HR21) and will eventually have the same capabilities.
And DOD is in beat form for the HR20 right now anyway, so its not really technically available to anyone yet....;)

Yes, there was plenty of information. Installers no longer carry the first HR20-100's. Soo, it was obvious it was an HR21. If he wouldn't have said he just had it installed, then your response would have been appropriate, but since he did, it isn't.

hey, what do you know. I was right.
PS. I also find it curious why you decided to quote and disagree with me and not the first person to state it was an HR21.
PSS. Have you seen Earl's thread about todo avatars??

If all else fails, look at the box it came in!

Or open the door that covers the card it will tell you what model.

Actually, the BEST way to easily get the receiver type is to open the door for the access card (the one on the right hand side). Certainly there are other methods .. including making assumptions .. that work.
Suggesting that the OP look under the door for this information is always appropriate.

Yep, see posts #5 and #20.
And not to nitpick, but the OP didn't ask how to find out what receiver he had. He asked what receiver it was. Telling him to open the access door doesn't really answer his question.

I just got my free upgrade yesterday. It is an HR20-100S (a "refurb" and made in Mexico) and it has the model and S/N on right hand side of the back panel. I don't know about the door on the right front because I haven't taken the plastic wrap off of it yet. They forgot to include the "B" band converters, so D* is shipping them FedEx overnight. By the way, what's the difference between the 100S and the 700S????, they look indentical to me.

Different manufacturers, slight ventilation differences, RF antenna is internal on 700, external on 100. Some different outputs I think as well?
