I'm a new owner of a 721, and I know since my last receiver was a plain jane 3900 I had always left the receiver on. Now that I've had the 721 for a couple months, I just realized that I leave the receiver on and just shut my HTsystem and TV off. I imagine it's bad for the hard drive as it's sitting there buffering everything that on the main tuner the whole time. Please confirm that I should leave the 721 off for any time I'm not viewing. It's obviously another button to press in the sea of remotes but if it will save the hard drive life, I'll obviously do it. Also, I'm assuming that the PVRing will still work on schedule with the unit turned off?

Hmmmmm..... good question...... I know that the 50x has to be powered off in order to receive a full guide update, but what about the 721?

Gee didnt someone say the power cyckles are harder on HDs than just leaving them run?

If I dont turn off my 721 eventually the guide gets stale. I thnk it has to be powered up to get the updated gude...

On or off, the 721 is really always on at all times.

You will get the guide updates and software no matter if its on or off.

BTW Welcome Mustang :hi:

It is received on the second tuner I think, I know new software updates are so it leaves your tv viewing uninterrupted.

I leave it on all the times since there is no benefit to turn it off. HD still spins even when it's off unless the unit is unplugged. I unintentionally turned the unit off yesterday morning and noticed that there was a SW update.
I laso took a notice of the unit temperature in the system info page. I don't remember this existed on L107. Mine now shows 102F.

I guess it just turns the tuner off.

Does turning off the 721 allow it to do some housekeeping chores?

If both tuners are off then the HD isn't being in written to, right? Why would the disk keep spinning?

Beats me. When the unit is powered off, it should park the HD and wake it up a minute or so before a scheduled timer event.

If the 721 is anything like Ultimatetv, it is constantly receiving guide data, which would cause the HD to always be on. When the power is off, I would also speculate that it is defragmenting and doing file maintenance.
