they tried to install HD for my buddies DTV service, they have the SD stuff now and it works fine, but the installers said they can't get a signal..
Does that make any sense??? As far I remember, my old dish and new dish point in the same direction. One is just bigger than the other.

If your buddy had a 1 LNB dish and is upgrading to a 5 LNB dish there could be a LOS issue to the west where the 110 and 119 satallites are.
For HD, the dish needs to see satellites at 99, 101, 103, 110 and 119. It is pointed at 101, but needs about 20 degrees of open view to the west of where it is pointed.
You can use www.dishpointer.com to get a pretty good idea of whether or not you (or your friend) has or does not have line of sight. You need to check for each of the indicated satellites, as it will show a line from the location of your dish, and you can then determine if there are trees or buildings that would block that.

Why would there be any problems in Fort Lauderdale ?
Palm trees in the way ?

I would have him call DirecTV back and see if they can't get a supervisor out to verify there is no line of sight for the HD satellites. Sometimes the regular installers make mistakes (supervisors too) but if the supervisor says there is no line of sight there isn't a whole lot your buddy can do.

I live in lauderdale, but this is located in Brick NJ...
They are sending out a "specialist" to try to get it to work..

good to hear, the 'specialist' would be a tech supervisor.
with luck he will get a signal
You might even suggest that he try splitting the signal between two dishes

I have a feeling the installers lunch was getting cold and he called it a day.. I warned my friends switching that installs is the biggest headache, after that it's smooth sailing.
