What is up with HBO and the Star Wars repeats???

The movie variety is like listening to a Clear Channel radio station.

Just venting... but I've been happier with the movie selection on HDnet and they only have one channel.

HBO has been like this for as long as they've been in existence. The only reason I keep a subscription is for their original programming.

I recently started renting movies from one of those DVD vending machines (DVD Express) in the supermarket. For only $1/night per movie you can't beat it. And they stock new releases the same day they are released. It's really a great service. I'll never waste my time and money with "premium" movie channels.

True. But have you noticed they have been repeating these episodes for over a year. I can't take it anymore.

It's as bad as classic radio and the Stones' Can't Get No Satisfaction.

Yep. As others stated above, I only hold on to premium channels for as long as I need to see the original programming.
Once the season ends, I drop it.

Actually, you can beat it. Netflix & Blockbuster online usually come out to cheaper than $1 per movie, you get new releases in your mailbox the day of release and you don't have to go anywhere.

Haven't been to Holt in quite a few years. Used to be in a golf league at El Dorado in Mason and would pass through Holt every week. Come to think of it, I haven't golfed in awhile either. Go State.

HBO = "Hey, Beastmaster's On!"

I forget where I heard this, but when I did, I LMAO! When I was a kid, and we first got HBO, it seemed like they had 2 movies: Beastmaster, and The Big Red One.

I do netflix now.

It all depends on how many movies you watch per month. I only watch about 4-5 per month so I end up losing money with Netflix. And most of their cheaper plans only allow you to get one movie at a time, which doesn't work for me. And I always hated having to plan out which movie to watch and figure out what day it would arrive in my mailbox. If you wake up one morning and want to watch a movie, Netflix isn't going to help you if you don't have any movies on the way. The DVD machine is 3 blocks from my house and I can walk over there on a whim. All in all it's the better option for me.

I'm not familiar with Netflix & Blockbuster on-line, or how ir works/what it costs, but the online aspect is what spartanstew was talking about.

I just checked the HBO schedule guide and a Star Wars episode will air 15 times next week (I did not count duplicate HD or Latino broadcasts).

I am going to cancel... I enjoy Bill Maher but the movie line up is too weak. I will watch their exclusives on DVD and hopefully Blu-Ray.

OMG! So True! Beastmaster, Star Wars and Star Trek II were mine! Here's my Dad when he came home from work back in the day:

"For Pete's sake....you were watching that when I left!"

TOO FUNNY! HOLY CRAP! THAT WAS OVER 20 YEARS AGO!

What's funnier? Here's my girlfriend today:

Let's not forget the ever-present "Clash of the Titans" and the original "Superman" with Chris Reeve. When I first got HBO, there was a 50-50 chance that one of those two movies were going to be on.

I guess the licensing from Lucasfilm is costing HBO a lot of money, they is why they are raising their rates again this year. ;)

Seriously, how many times can you watch the same program before you starting quoting every line before the actor says it? :nono2:

We had HBO before we moved overseas. Spent over 6 years in England and Germany. When we came back and got HBO again, they were playing the SAME movies they were playing when we left (except for their monthly premiere)!!

Given what I'm reading, why would they be worth $1 more a month than the others, let alone the $2 more they will be charging soon??? Sorry, but I just can't see paying that much just to see "The Wire". I'll wait until it hits DVD.

Yeah we joined Netlflix last week. So far so good. We opted for the $9/mth plan. Now if I can just convince my wife we don't need Starz anymore.

Oh and if you're in to Blu-ray or HD DVD, Netflix has you covered.

While I don't mind Star Wars, these movie channels repeat movies so much. Starz or somethign has been showing Jumanji ever since I subscribed that year.

I subscribed to Netflix to watch different movies. When my free year of Starz and Showtime run out, I'm not going to pay.

The Jewel stores and their gas stations all have those machines outside their places, and $1 per movie. Thought about trying it myself.

Hey, I like watching Star Wars in HD !! :D

Nevertheless, the OP does have a good point in that all the premiums constantly repeat movies. It's been like that for as long as I've subscribed to the movie channels.

There are times, though, when my favorite movies are on that cycle ... makes for good background noise when working at home. :)

I will politely disagree and proudly take on the label of "nutso". :righton:

The larger issue is not that HBO repeats Star Wars, but the concentration of the repeats for over year, which, comes at the cost of not being able to view a wide variety of movies. Rolling through six episodes week after week monopolizes the schedule.

HD amplified my negative reaction to any Jar Jar scene.

However, it WAS (emphasizing past tense) nice to see the older episodes in HD, but after umpteen times, that ship sailed long ago.

I usually don't subscribe to the premium channels because they usually don't show the movies in original aspect ratio, just pan and scan.

Hey, if TCM and Fox Movie Channel can show OAR, why not HBO?

AMike

The frequency of repeats has always been a source of frustration, not just with HBO, but the others as well. I think it makes it more noticeable today versus the past is because we get both east/west feeds of the premium channels as well as having multiple channels within each premium package. Also, unlike the distant past, premium channels have exclusive contracts with certain studios which I think limits variety.

When we first got expanded cable in 1980, we subscribed to HBO, Showtime and The Movie Channel. At that time, it was not uncommon for all three of those services having the same movie on at or around the same time. The movie that was most repeated during that era was "Airplane" which is still one of my all time favorites. It got to the point where my high school friends and I could quote that movie verbatim.

Not if you're watching the HD channels. They show most everything in the correct aspect ratio. The pan and scan crap is reserved for the SD channels.

FWIW, I've been with both NetFlix and Blockbuster Online for the past three or four years. I had NetFlix for over a year and then Blockbuster enticed me with their free unlimited in-store exchanges. I was actually getting more movies than I had time to watch so I eventually just started mailing the movies back in and not getting the freebies. BB's service started to deteriorate noticeably (extremely sloooow turnaround times) and then they decided to jack up their rates and reduce the number of freebies you could get. This was about the time they started closing a lot of their retail outlets. I always wondered how the policy of increasing rates and reducing service was expected to increase their revenues.:sure: The only reason I stuck with them was because one of my local BB stores stocked both HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray discs (I have both formats), which is not the norm for them (they sided with the Blu-Ray camp and only select stores stock HD titles, although both formats are available online).

Recently, BB jacked up their rates once again so I waited until just before the end of my billing cycle and then cancelled them. I had already signed up for NetFlix again and was able to get a new free 2-week trial period. During those two weeks I received more movies from NetFlix than I did from Blockbuster, including the free in-store exchanges!

The Red Box DVD rental kiosks are great if you only watch standard definition movies. The last time I checked, they didn't stock and HD titles so they are of absolutely no interest to me. Once you've gone Hi-Def it's hard to settle for less.

HBO and Cinemax HD's are just awful.
