This is my first time posting on this forum and have a question of all the DBS pros. out there.

I subscribe to Dish Network and have an older model 4500 receiver feeding into a Hitachi 43" digital TV and also a 4500 receiver feeding into an Hitachi analog set. On the 43" digital set my local channels have a (I believe the term is) "breathing" quality to them. Particularly when showing faces close up during movement of the faces. It's almost like the features on faces have to "catch up" with with the movement. This is not pixulation (spelling)! All other channels are great, almost DVD quality.

Would a newer receiver such as a PVR 508 solve this problem? As I mentioned before, this doesn't happen on my analog sets.

Tahnks, Brade.

Hi Brade and welcome to DBSTalk.Com! :hi:

What you are seeing is a compression artifact. It happens when any particular channel is heavily compressed. There is nothing wrong with your TV or satellite receiver. The reason why you don't see it on your analog set is because your digital TV is converting the signal to a 480 line progressive format making the affect much more noticeable.

Thanks for the reply Chris.
As I said, this is only noticable with my local channels. Are they compressed more than the regular "Dish" channels?

Local channels are compressed to within an inch of their lives. :). What you are seeing is unfortunately normal. I complain to the right folks whenever I can, but it seems to be a fact of life.

See ya

Thanks Tony,
Guess I'll just have to live with it!

Our locals vary from stellar to pure crap. It seems like the primetime shows look better than the daytime shows. At night, our locals are as good as the Premium channels but the next morning during the news shows, they are absolutely horrid. What gives with that?

My local channels on my digital set are crappy all the time, not just at night. It's a shame to have to pay extra for these when they're so crappy!
