I recently noticed that some of the Voom channels, notably World Cinema, Film Fest and Kung Fu, have been showing several films that are available on DVD from the Criterion Collection. These include "Amarcord," "Tokyo Drifter," "The Bad Sleep Well" and "High and Low." Does anyone know if Voom is airing the unreleased HD transfers from Criterion, or transfers made from other source material? I don't know what Criterion's policy is regarding TV rights, but it seems odd that multiple transfers of some of these films would be made, and I thought someone here might have the inside scoop.

If no one knows, I may try to do some comparisons with their SD counterparts when I have more time in the coming weeks.

It wouldn't surprise me to hear that. Other channels have been using laser disc masters for some time. So why not HD/Blu DVD masters?

I KNOW that HDNet Movies has shown some movies from old laser disc masters (not masters made from the laser disc, the masters used to make laser disc). The way I know this comes from "The Andromeda Strain". The CLV laser disk has a break right in the middle of a scene and another on a sharp cut between scenes. The movie shown on HD Net movies had sharp cuts to black for just a few frames on those exact spots. They are not there on the versions seen on regular TV.

See ya
