View Full Version : How often do receivers call in PPV charges?
I have a 501 I'm thinking of selling to a friend. I want to sell it with a free and clear card, but I have a PPV charge on it that has been there for over a week now. How long do I have to wait before it uploads the charge to Dish?
TIA.

One of the menu's includes an option to force a call, I think its in the setup or diagnostics section. That might force it to upload the PPV charge, and let you know if there is a problem with the phone connection.

bearklaw, I tried that and it says "no dial-out pending". The help button tells me this means that it "does not need to have it's smart card records updated", which is, of course, wrong.

Funny thing...this PPV stuff is. I have one from October still on my receiver and Dish has not billed me for it yet. my system likewise shows no dial out pending and i have alerted them to this as well and they do not seem concerned. I am plugged into the phone line and the line tests ok. guess Dish doesn't want to charge me!
It is funny. The joke my be on us. I got a free PPV coupon in a letter explaining the rate increase. That coupon says that I need to redeem it by April 30th. If this charge isn't uploaded by then (you still have a charge from last October), Dish won't have to honor that coupon.
Or, can I send the coupon in and have my account credited?
Anybody..?

When the charge is uploaded they know the day you ordered it on, so as long as you order the movie before the expiration date your safe. :)
Rumor has it that the DISH rcvrs' modem call-in no. has been overwhelmed. Until they install more lines your rcvr may just get a "busy" signal. So it may be a while until the PPV bill on card is downloaded.

Here's a thought...why doesn't Dish just download an option to the receiver that allows users to "force" and dial-in and that way, you could force it during the daytime, or something when fewer receivers are trying to dial in.

When *does* the dial-in usually happen, anyway?

I've got a couple of those April 30th coupons as well, and my reciever still hasn't dialed out. John, are you positive it goes by the order date of the movie?
And does anybody know a time they dial? Does the reciever have to be off? I have to drape a cord across the living room floor so it would be nice to just force the dial out.
Thanks.

On my older model 3000 receiver (hey, it still works...kinda), I noticed that the receiver will sometimes (not always) try to call home at power up. I can hear the phone line relay clicking. When I hear that, I usually power down, hook up the phone line, and power back up and it calls home (or tries to anyway--sometimes I think it gets a busy because it is to short for a real transmission).
Not sure if all receivers act the same (likely not), but you might listen the next time you power up your receiver and see if you hear the phone relay click.

I am a Rv'er 90% of the time, just happen to be home for a couple of months due to wife's illness and I ordered several PPV's, I am getting ready to hit the road again and wanted to get these paid for via free coupons, called Dish and asked them to upload the purchases and bill me, cust rep said they can not do, that it is done automatically, I asked when, she did not know.

I've had this happen, I've been billed for my PPV movie and it still remains in the recvr as if I had not paid it. I called Dish and they noted it soon would be gone and she had the info I already had paid. A couple of weeks later I looked again and it was gone
It doesn't matter when they bill you, they know when it was purchased, so as long as those movies were purchased before April 30th your ok.

Bob...that is not 100% absolutely true. I had a PPV that sat on my receiver for over 4 months! Finally after raising a stink, I got a Tech Support person who got a little bit of info from me and set up their system to force my receiver into a dial-out. It can be done but the csr's are 100% clueless on this....you have to talk to Tech Support and even then, hope you get someone higher up. It took me 3-4 tries till someone finally said "Yes it is unusual that your receiver refuses to phone home" and that is why they forced the dial in. Hope this helps!

Basicly the try IMMEDIATELY. If they can't get thru so have a certain number of entries (i never heard a confirmed number) that they will allow to be queued up before thay will refuse another. Apparently they do not currently consider how old the oldest PPV is.

So does the purchase info menu clear the ppv's when they have been dialed out? Or is that info there always?
The ppvs are erased once the receiver has dialed in (thats what my receivers do).

Well, after 3 days of a phone cord dragged across my living room floor, its got to go!
If the mood strikes me, I'll play CSR roulette and see if someone can force the dial out.:)
The ppvs are still there, and since John C says it goes by date purchased, I'm not going to worry about it anymore.
Eventually, I'll reach that ppv limit, and maybe then it will finally dial out!
