I own a single family house and I am trying to get Dish installed. Unfortunately the only place the install people can get the satellite is in my front yard, about 5 feet from the street. They plan to put in a 4-foot post and trench the cable to the house (20 feet). I will call MissUtility before they dig in the yard. Now the city and county both claim I need a building permit to have a post with a satellite and cabling done! Permit cost is at least $70 and probably more plus a big delay in installing the Dish. Don't FCC regs prohibit the city and country from doing this?
Thanks,
Portie
I'd get a second opinion. I don't know what area your in or the topography. If they said it has to go in the front yard, There shouldn't be any reason it can't be secured to the house. Then again, it could be a multitude of factors limiting your LOS. You could take a cheap compass and try to do your own site survey. Get your coordinates from your receiver and see if you get a clear shot closer to the house. Make sure you are not near any metal objects while performing the test. Hope this helps.

Well it is installed in my front yard. Doesn't look that great and time will tell if the City tried to cite me. If they do we have FCC law on our side and my wife is a lawyer....
Thanks,

Install is not that hard....my best suggestion...have them show you where they want to put it, then have your companies mark the safe route and grab a shovel and start digging...put it in yourself. Heck...if you just dig a shallow trench with like a tiller or something, you wouldn't even need to contact the utilities to map out the safe route...but you would want to run the wire through some sort of plastic conduit or something underground to prevent damage from moisture, roots, etc. What they are trying to get you on the the fact that "electrical wiring is supposed to be installed by a contractor and inspected for code". Do you really think your local authority is going to remember who you are if they drive by your house one day and the dish is there. Just put it in yourself and save the headache. How much is a post at home depot???? Save the headaches.
