Canada's two small dish satellite TV providers continue to grow their businesses, despite a sluggish economy and growing illegal use of satellite TV reception equipment throughout the country.

Earlier this month, Star Choice, backed by Shaw Communications, reported that it enrolled 19,192 new customers during the quarter ending Nov. 30. That took the company's subscriber count to 779,216.

During the quarter, the Star Choice/Shaw satellite division also booked a restructuring charge of $4.8 million to account for the elimination of 400 positions. The job reductions will result in future annual savings of about $6 million, Shaw said.

Bell ExpressVu, the small dish service controlled by Toronto-based telecommunications giant BCE, said it added 45,000 net subscribers during the third quarter. The company had 1.221 million customers at the end of the three-month period.

In late December, BCE said it expects Bell ExpressVu to finish 2003 with between 1.45 million to 1.55 million customers.
