Hi8 to (something)? [Archive]

Hi. I have an old Hi8 Camcorder. I am planning on transferring the movies to a different medium, but I'm not sure which is the best way. Hopefully you guys can give me advice.

I have a choice between RCA out to a DVD Recorder or using the firewire out of the camera itself.

Any pros and cons for both?

I would Firewire it into your computer and then play with optimizing the picture quality before burning to DVD.

I'll do the firewire transfer, but I'm not sure how to acquire the software for it. It's a Sony, but I don't remember it coming with any CDs (if they shipped one, it's now lost).

Can you suggest any free or low cost software solutions? Thanks.
