HR21-700 woes

Dude,

I was all geeked when I got my second HD DVR, after having so much enjoyment out of my HR20 for the past year plus.

With the boxes being so similar I'm surprised that the software revisions are so far apart. I recently got my HR20 networked and have been enjoying the On Demand stuff and was excited about not needing a phone line for it anymore. I bought another wireless bridge and hooked up my new HR21 in the same fashion. Of course, I forgot to come here and read up on the differences in the boxes until the On Demand stuff wasn't working on the HR21 after a couple of days. Further checking shows that remote scheduling, Media Share, etc also aren't working yet. It looks like the software is just lagging and the features are forthcoming, but it's just surprising.

Hopefully they'll be more similar in the not too distant future.

And the funniest part of all :

They DISCONTINUED the HR20 !!! but it gets all the updates!!! hahahahaha .. laughable..

HR21 - no ota tuner , no firmware updates , final insult - you have to take it or leave it.

it's a newer box... software must be developed, tested, tweaked.. before it can be rolled out nationally..

those features shouldn't be too far behind though.. :)

the HR20 gets the most updates because it is the most prevalent at the time... once it has been matured... development will focus on the HR21... and then so on...

the HR21 will have an OTA solution soon... the firmware updates have become much more frequent... and I think you will find the HR21 'caught up' with the HR20 pretty soon...

not sure what monopoly you're referring to...

The HR21 has media share - remote booking and VOD are part of the software, but DirecTV is rolling those features out gradually. Both should be available on the HR21 by the next software update. The HR20-100 didn't get VOD immediately, it lagged the HR20-700 by many months.

I know everything will catch up in due time. I was just a little cornfused at first. No complaints because I at least have HD on both of my TVs. The rest is just icing. My HR20 is in my living room, so I can play music, share photos, etc with family and we can do on demand with it. The media share feature isn't as important with the HR21 and we didn't have on demand with our R15 that we replaced so all is well.

It's really not a complaint. This is my second time having Directv (had to drop it when I lived in an apartment for a couple of years) and I've had nothing but great experiences with it, including my Directv plus boxen. I've had standard boxes, Direcway, Directivo and Directv plus and enjoyed it a million times better than cable, even with it's quirks.
