I was wondering what the best chain of events would be to cancel Dish when going to DirecTV.

I figure I should:

1) Disconnect all my receivers the night before.
2) The day of install, have my E* dishes taken off my roof and the D* dish installed
3) Set up the new D* receivers and activate the account
4) Call E* to cancel my old account

I have been a customer of E* for over 3 years and have no contract that I know of. Any fees that should concern me?

Is there anything I'm missing? If I disconnect the E* receivers, will they need me to activate them to disconnect them?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

I would call them while your receivers are hooked up, then after you get off the phone from cancelling i would disconnect everything.
Welcome to D*..enjoy YES...and the YANKS.

Post in the Directv discussion how you like your new PVR's when they are installed.

Hello CNSF, what I done when I canceled E* is disconnected the receiver and installed the D* receiver and got programing set up with D*. And then I called 1800333DISH and canceled service with them. And listened to there offers to not get me to cancel. Expect E* to offer you all there programing for a month free to keep you as a customer. At least that was my experience. Good luck and enjoy D* I've been happy with my decision as I switched in 2001. And I was with E* for 4 years. No regrets here !

Also make sure that you call up a month ahead of time and take your account off credit card auto pay if you have it. I hear reports that they will NOT refund any monies for service you don't receive after cancelling (in case you didn't notice you pay for service a month in advance on every bill).

It's a real weasel deal and I hear that the Better Business Bureau has a lot of complaints about this issue. But the way to fight back is to make sure YOU get ahead of E* for a month before you bolt. This way they don't have a leg to stand on when they try to bill you for the one month in advance you won't be getting.

Oh, BTW... I'm still an E* subscriber, but I've always planned to do it this way should I ever decide to switch.

Before you cancel service, DOWNGRADE to just your locals. Dish will credit your account for the innitial 2nd month of the packages you paid for in advance, when you started service. They charge you $5.00 for the downgrade and $5.00 A month if you don't have at least AT50, but because you can apply the credits to your bill, the last bill won't be very high. Thats what I did, saved me about $40.00! It takes about 2 or 3 days for the credit to appear on your account, THEN cancel service, and pay your FINAL bills. Most people that stop service with Dish, don't even realize they really have credits on their account. SORRY CHARLIE!!!!

I cancelled Dish last year and had CC AutoPay. I was promptly credited for the service I did not use. I am back with Dish now and haven't had a billing issue.

Stopped cc autopay, but am not going to try and get credits I don't deserve. For the extra $15 I'd rather leave with a clean bill of health.

I'm glad to hear that. We'll just chalk it up to anti E* propaganda I read (numerous times) on dbsforums.com.
