This email was from a DTV Rep. Looks like an HDPC-20 is required for the Multi-Room-Viewing feature. MVR will NOT work with just two HR21.
HDPC-20 release date is late 2008.

Thanks fort writing us back. I see that you're a new customer of DIRECTV and we'd like to welcome you to the DIRECTV family. I'm sorry though to hear about the continued confusion regarding the multi-room viewing feature on the HR21. As mentioned in our previous response, you will be able to use your HR21 receiver connected to an HDPC-20 receiver for multi-room viewing; however, the HR21 will not be a multi-room receiver in which you do not need the HDPC-20.
The DIRECTV HDPC-20 let’s you bring the best of DIRECTV to your computer screen. Plus, it let’s you use your PC as a DVR, recording DIRECTV content directly to your computer’s hard drive. The DIRECTV HDPC-20 can also take advantage of your PC’s computing power and certain Windows Media Center applications to offer unique benefits.
Features of the HDPC-20:
- Watch DIRECTV right on your computer screen
- Use your computer as a DVR
- Simple setup and connection
- Enhanced user experience from PC computer power and internet connection
- Thumbnails of recorded content
- Movie guides with movie jackets, cast and production info, reviews, etc.
- Powerful search functions
- Integrates all your digital content in one menu: DIRECTV programming, plus your music, pictures, video, sports, and online media
- Can stream all your media to multiple TV’s in the house (via Windows Media Center Extenders, other devices on the network that serve as proxies to Windows Media Center, such as an Xbox 360.
- Remote control has all standard DIRECTV functions for familiar ease of use.
