View Full Version : Buying my own receiver for a swap
I asked in another forum but will ask here as well in order to get as many answers as possible:
Currently I have four receivers, three standard and one HD-DVR. I would like to go to the nearest Best Buy or Costo and buy an HD receiver to replace one of my standard receivers. My question is this. Knowing the newly bought receiver is a lease, how does DirecTV handle this. What happens to the replaced SD receiver? When is the newly bought HD receiver activated?
Basically I want to do a straight swap. What are the particulars to doing this?
Will getting that previously mentioned HD receiver as a replacement alter my current contract in any way? Also, since the SD receiver that is being replaced is a leased receiver will Directv send the shipping box to my service address or mailing address as I would prefer the mailing address? Afterschool kids really %&$*# with the mail around here so I would prefer the mailing address. Any insights?
Sorry for all the questions.... :):)

The new unit will be leased and will give you a new commitment end date of 2 years after activation. It will not extend any existing commitment by two years.
Swapping out a receiver is typically a no-brainer and they will send you a return kit as soon as you deactivate the older unit. No cost to you.
The only gotcha can be if the one being replaced is the primary unit on your account. Sometimes the CSRs won't get all the packages and grandfathering correct when the primary receiver is replaced so watch that carefully.
Good luck and have fun,
Tom

Then it's a good thing I am thinking of doing this just 3 weeks after initial contract committment. The swapped receiver is not the main receiver so it should not be a hassle.
However, what of the shippnig address? Is it always the service address or can the billing address be requested for the return box?

I think you can ask for either. I've never seen that one before. :)

I thought that if it was just a reciever the commitment was 12 months? I thought someone here had said that the advanced equipment was what triggered a 24 month commitment? Or is all HD equipment considered advanced?

Why do I get the feeling that "waay south" and the question of billing versus service address speaks to say Mexico???? .

HD and DVR receivers are considered advanced.

No, but I can see where one might think that. Actually, waay south refers to the border town I have a home in. But I have to admit, there was a lot of Directv shenanigans going just across the border back during the "football" cards. Remember those? Never measured it, but I think i'm about 1/2 mile from the border. And i'm on the U.S. side, i assure you.

The standard receiver is an 18 month commitment.

I have two older Sony A55 SD receivers (still working... :) ) - if and when they die, what's the policy on these? I would suspect since I own them that it will just be a lease process that I'll go through for the new SD or HD replacements.

How oftern does DirecTV actually ask for the unit back?
Every unit I have replaced is usually >3 years old. I can't imagine DirecTV would be too interested in my current units 2-3 years from now.
In fact I have 3 units collecting dust at home now... what's the best way to get rid of them?

The newer leased units they're going to ask for. Granted, if I keep my HR20 as long as I've kept my owned units I'd be very surprised if they asked for it back 3-5 years from now as I assume technology will catch up with the units. As for old units....I found a local business that salvages and recycles old electronic gear. Haven't given them my broken Samsung yet but that, along with a couple of old recievers, probably will go that way. Had given old but working DirecTV units to family members but they're into the leased equipment now so that avenue of disposal is gone.

DirecTV has no problem shipping things to alternate addresses. When they were replacing a receiver for me, I asked to have it shipped to my office so that it wouldn't be left out on my front porch. They honored that request with no hesitation.
Directv shipped all my recovery kits via Fedex.
Some people have PO Boxes for mailing addresses.
Fedex dosnt deliver to PO Boxes.
