I have an old R10 from years ago that I sold on eBay when I had to switch to Comcost. The person I sold it to broke the card slot and ended up returning it for a refund. So now I I'm back to D* and have this broken Tivo. The black piece that holds the card against the copper prongs is broken off. (See picture) I tried to finagle it back into place but nothing's working.

Sooo, my question is: is it worth it to keep messing with it or should I scrap it and spend the $60 on an R15? Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get a card to be read by this thing without that black piece? Or a place to find a replacement black piece?

If you absolutely love your TiVo, maybe buy another busted R10 for parts?

DIRECTV's R15 and R16 receivers are really solid now, nothing like they were two years ago. You might give them a try.

I've read that the Tivo interface was more intuitive than the R15 so I'm thinking it may be worth it. I do fondly remember my Tivo days...

Not a bad idea to pick up a busted one for parts... and hope the same part isn't broken!! :)

Pretty unlikely. That's not a part usually breaks.

This connector (ISO-7816) is generic part - you can buy it on-line or find manufacturer's site and order a sample for free.

Tell me about it - I was shocked when the woman returned the thing to me with that piece broken off and rattling around inside the case! She must have really jammed her card in there good to have it break off like that. My poor Tivo.

That's fantastic, thanks! I think it's worth the $5 gamble to see if this works. This is probably a long shot, but anyone know if there's a way to connect an external smart card reader to the unit via USB or otherwise, in case I can't get the internal one put back together?

Usually those DVRs doesn't support external card readers.

I'm just impressed that you let the lady return it for a refund when she broke it. You're a lot nicer than I would've been.

Also, the USB ports on the DirecTivos are not enabled unless you have hacked the software.

Not my choice, PayPal's! Believe me, I fought it with them. She said it arrived that way to her, to which I replied that she was more than welcome to file a claim with UPS since it was insured. I even showed PayPal a copy of the last D* bill I had that showed it was just working on my account. Long story short, PayPal sided with her. It's still a sore subject with me, as you can tell!!

Thanks for that info.
