View Full Version : Phone Line?
I am crunching the numbers to see if I can get D*
Right now I have Time Warner and I pay $117 for TV and Internet...
I have no land line in my apartment...
Do I need one?
If so that is another expense on top of D*and a new ISP for internet.
Nope. I haven't had one since last Spring and my DirecTV works just fine.
Nice...
But how does D* 'address' my box to say add a programming package or something?

via satellite. Phone line required for PPV ordered on box. If no phone line you can order PPV online. Or if you have one of the HR-2x series and the box is networked, it "talks" to DirecTv over the internet.

Programming for based on your sim card and box.... Sent via Satellite.
If you get a HD-DVR you should be able to order PPV and event via the remote over the internet. Otherwise you can use directv.com or the 1-800 system.

Of course if you have no phone line you don't get Caller ID popups, if that's important to you.

Drop TWC hook your box up to the internet, be happy. It worked for me. :)
I don't have a landline, doubt I ever will again. Sat TV. Cable modem (TWC). Cell phone. That's all I need. :)

I would have dropped my landline in a heartbeat but I could never get TWC out to install cable line so I could get cable modem. Went with DSL and won't give TWC the time of day.

I dropped my landline and kept my DSL. :D You just need to ask for your DSL to be on a "dry loop". I believe they are now required to offer DSL without the phone. I'm with Verizon so it may depend on who you are with, but I only have to pay an extra $5/month for internet on a dry loop. It sure beats what they were charging for the phone and all of the extra taxes and fees that were piled on because of it. Even with the extra $5 is a heck of a lot cheaper than what Charter wants for their equivalent Cable internet.
Depending on the model of receiver you get, you can connect the satellite receiver to the internet via your router and that will allow it to do things the land line would except for Caller ID.

Viatalk (http://www.viatalk.com/), the company I use, currently has a special for 2 lines with two years of unlimited calling to the US & Canada for $199. Fees for E-911, etc. add another $2.50/mo. That's got to be cheaper than all of those cell phone minutes.
