I have an H20 receiver in one of my rooms and am looking at upgrading it with an HR20 receiver (I already have DVR service). However, the room it is located in has only one coax cable coming in and it is very difficult to run a second coax run.

My question is if I do get the HR20 receiver, will I be able to use the dual tuner feature once DirecTV rolls out Single wire Multiswitch product. Will this be a separate product? Or will I need to wait for a special receiver to be introduced that has it built in?

How much longer before we have something available to us that allows us to utilize the dual tuner feature with only one cable run?

I ask because I am trying to determine whether or not I should go ahead and get an HR20 now or wait if I am going to need a new receiver.

I also currently am using a 6 X 8 Multiswitch if that matters in this evaluation. I am using up all 8 outputs at this time

Thanks

Yes, you will be able to use the HR20 with the SWM to us both tuners with only one cable to the receiver. When will the SWM be officially released to the consumer market. We simply don't know but it looks like it will be a while. DirecTv is also working on a new slimline LNB dish that has a SWM built into it - also no guess on when it will be available. You can get an SWM now from a member here, Dave29, but they are a bit pricy ($300)

All of the H/HR-20/21 receivers work with the SWM.
If you are already using all eight outputs off the WB68 then you may need to add a SWM to the WB68 for more tuners.
"Normally" the SWM would replace the multi-switch, but the SWM8 will only provide connections for 8 tuners [two per DVR] and 3 legacy outputs for older receivers [making 10 tuners total].

[making 10 tuners total].

Wouldn't that be 11?

not sure I understand...if SWM8's purpose is to use one cable run for both tuners..why do you say "two per DVR"...please explain

The DVR has two tuners [that can work off one cable] where the non DVR has only one tuner.
This means that the SWM8 can feed 4 DVRs or eight non DVR receivers, or any mix of the two totaling eight tuners.

I wonder why they didn't include 4 legacy ports on the SWM8. Then you could use those four to connect to a WB68. Thus giving you a total of 16 outputs.

Can you connect the SWM8 to four outputs of a WB68? Thus giving you a potential 15 outputs.

Inquiring minds need to know. :D

so in my situation whereby I have one cable run from basement out of WB68 Multiswitch today going up two flights up to room that currently has a H20 (obviously only one tuner)...

when I go to replace that H20 receiver with an HR20 (two tuners now)...if I have a SWM..will I then continue using my one coax cable run to that room from the SWM to the HR20 receiver and be able to use both tuners...I am assuming I will need some sort of splitter on the receiver side enabling me to go from one cable run to two tuners...

Is this accurate?

I believe that when using the SWM, the receiver uses internal splitting.

Couldn't you pay someone to run the extra line for less than the cost of the SWM8?

The SWM DVRs only need SAT #1 connected and do the splitting internally.

You are probably right that it would cost less, but its a run that would need to come from the basement in the front part of the house to a 2nd floor bedroom in the back of the house...also the wall where the TV is located is not an outside wall...so not sure it can be done and if so can it be done cosmetically pleasing

Well for one thing the legacy ports don't pass the Ka-lo band, so even if it did have four ports, the WB68 wouldn't get the new HD channels.
There is a legacy port extender that will add more legacy ports if needed,

One cable connects from the SWM to the 1st satellite input on the HRxx. The receiver recognizes the SWM input and internally provides both tuners with their signals. I got a SWM8 from dave29 and it works great. Also with the SWM8, there is a connection point on the SWM for OTA antenna input and if diplexed out at the receiver location can be used as input for the OTA signal on the HR20 (the HR21 does not have an OTA input) or other OTA tuner.
