Equipment obsolesense does not seem to be affecting E*. I have two 5 year old Model 1000 that still seem to be working very well except for the EPG which is very slow. They took the Dish 500 upgrade no problem. How long do you think E* will go before they forcing us to upgrade. I can see very little reason to shell out hundreds of dollars to upgrade (two receivers) , I'd love a PVR but at:money: $350.00 it's not in my budget right now. Does anybody think that Dish will ever obsolete these receivers? Unless they modify the access cards to prevent theft of signal, I can't see a reason for them too.
I'd probably shift over to Direct TV is they ever failed because the
exisitng customer equipment rates are so high.
What's the oldest receiver that any members is currently using?

I think dish won't "Force you to upgrade", in that what you have now, you will be able to have long term. But anything new they talk about may be out of your reach. They could very well say that XYZ needs to be done via the Open TV Customer Service app and if you don't have one you will have to call the "We like to keep you on hold #"

I have 2 4000s I have had since fall of '87. Bought a 721 in Sept which I think works great. The guides on the 4000s are real slow too.

nuts4scuba, you must mean '97. Dish's small dish service didn't come on line until early '96.
I know there are a couple of us with the oldest models -- the 2000 -- still in operation (bought mine in Sep '96). Works great, UHF remote. Super setup to use with a wireless video sender to send picture to a different room.
Current software on the 2000 is version 7.09 which came down in July 2002.
I don't know of any receiver that has been declared out of bounds. They don't make 'em anymore, but they are upgrading the software.

I have a 4000 purchased May of '97....
a 1000 Purchased December of '97
And a Dishplayer purchased Spring 2001.
All the receivers are capable of doing everything they were designed to do. The 4000 went through that rough period a couple of years ago with bad upgrades. Each of these receivers had gotten new software within the last 6 months.
See ya
Tony
March of 1996 was the beginning of DISH Network broadcasting, the model 2000 was their first receiver. DISH is continuing to support all models (some would argue about the dishplayer) though I would expect most of the 2000's are starting to show their age.

Sorry I did mean '97 not '87. Didn't check my posting.

Charlie has said on the chats that while they won't take anything awat from you for keeping the old reciever, they figure anyone with a x000 has had it enough years to have gotten their full value out of them (Businessmen love depreciation cycles)
So I assume that if you spoke to dish about wanting new features for a old reciever, anyone with a 1000/2000/3000 would be directed to a 301 and anyone with a 4000/5000 would be directed to a 508.
Well, I just retired a 4000 that I bought in Dec 96. It was still supported, but I had several problems with DISH anti-piracy measures taking it down for hours at a time.
Last few times it happened, customer support told me it was because my smartcard was too old and was being targeted. They told me it would keep happening unless i bought a new card for $50 plus shipping.
Thus I would say that they do keep supporting old stuff, but will strongly encourage upgrading.

I have 2 2700s (now 2800s) purchased in late '98. Mine was replaced by a 508, and mymmom continued to use hers until it died last month. So now she is using the 2700 I used to use. I
Lowest end Dish reciever ever made was the 1000, it's the only Dish and maybe only US DBS receiver NOT to have an svideo output.
Back in the good 'ol days, I traded in my DirecTV eq (which cost over $500.00) for 2 model 1000 receivers in my conversion to E*. I currently have a 508 and 1 of the 1000's in my bedroom. The other is sitting there waiting to be used in the event my first one dies. I recently connected a SW21 with my Dish Twin and the 1000 supports the 3 Sat configuration. Although slow, it still gets the job done almost 8 years later.
My dad and uncle are both still using the old model 3000.

I still have a old 2000 with uhf remote still in service, still works other then a bad modem, I also own a 2700 that I purchased from Target a few years ago for just $49, still works fine. Once I pass my MCP Certification exam in a month or so and can find a entry-level IT position, possibly the PVR 522 will be out by then and possibly I will be able to afford to replace my old 2000 ;).

I have a 2000 sans card if anyone would like it - along with two remotes in very bad shape but still working AFAIK.
I have 2 HTS 3200s in operation. The system info screen says they are 2000s They and the UHF remotes still work.
