Well I installed sun's java the other day, and after I did so windows XP update informed me that I needed a security update the microsoft virtual machine (i was pretty sure I had this already). Yesterday, on another computer here, I uninstalled the Sun java that was installed during a netscape install and reinstalled it from the Sun website. This morning I get the Windows XP update telling me a security patch is needed, 810030: blah blah, the same one that was installed the other day when I actually turned on the Sun java for internet explorer that I had on here already. I didn't download it this time because I figure it must be trying to change something due to my installing the Sun's java but I really don't know.

Anyone have any info on why this update keeps popping up after I've already installed it? I know originally it fixes the big secuity hole, but once it's fixed it shouldn't need to fix it again.

Also, I would rather just use the Sun java, and do away with the the Microsoft Virtual Machine thing totally. I can't seem to find anything about uninstalling the VM. I have XP with some of the SP1 updates (critical necessary ones that pop up to download).

You should be able to handle this in the Internet Control Panel. You can go to the advanced tab and select use Sun Java somewhere down the list. You can also go to the "Set Programs and Defaults" panel on the Add/Remove control panel and select Sun Java. You might still want to keep up to date on the Microsoft VM because you never know when it might run.

Yeah that's kind of the problem, I don't want it to run but I get the feeling that if it's there it will. ;)

Looking through the ever so helpful knowledge base and so far haven't found anything about stripping it off of XP.

The "Set Program Defaults" is supposed to solve this problem, but I think it just hides the MS Java, not remove it.

I saw mention of that, but I guess without all the SP1 updates, I don't have that option. It should be in the left pane of the add or remove programs window right?

I installed the rest of the sp1 updates and have that button now.

The button that hides programs (IE, Messenger, Outlook, VM, etc.) so the user can't open them but any application that wants to use them can.

I have noticed that java scrips seem to be working better now.
