View Full Version : ABC HD boxes in and out at times
Does anyone have any idea why ABC in HD will cut in and out randomly? It doesn't affect any other channel, except for ABC HD. They have moved the dish to the roof and replaced the LNB's and Multiswitch and it is still happening.
I hope someone can provide some input into what might be causing this.
Thanks

I don't think it would be ABC collectively as I don't have the problem here at all. I would suspect your local station or an uplink problem of some sort. Just my guess. I doubt it is your equipment as your other locals are good.
Welcome to DBSTalk !
Does anyone else here get HD locals in the DC area? I am getting frustrated with it, and the sound doesn't go out (it is plugged directly to my reciever using fiber optics though)
Thanks for the welcome dav

Does your local ABC affiliate have their news in HD? If not my first guess would be they are the culprit.
Here in Nashville everytime the local ABC affiliate decides to run a scroll across the screen the HD goes to SD (this happens with NBC and FOX also as our CBS affiliate is the only news in HD).

They don't run the news in HD but this happens to all ABC programs.
By boxing in and out, I don't mean it goes SD, I'd be ok with that. What happens is that the picture will get all green and kind of pixelated for up to a min and then it returns normal. It is hard to explain without you seeing it.

I've been seeing some of that on ABC lately. Next time it happens, I'm going to flip over to OTA and see if it's the same.

I'm in DC. I get that on ABC (happened during Lost the past two weeks)....picture with green boxes, sound fine, then after 30-60 seconds it's fine. It's really frustrating.

Is there anything we can do about this? Do we call DirecTV or local ABC? Will they even care?

I see this issue a lot. It seems to have been going on for a long time, without a resolution. see the following thread:

This problem has been around for a long time, not just in DC. Other cities have also reported it but not as often as in DC. I have seen it here in DFW, a lot just before Christmas but not for the past few weeks. The "green pixelation" issue only occurs with ABC. Apparently the ABC station in Atlanta told someone it was a problem with ABC's encoder but I haven't seen any further information. Certainly it has nothing to do with your own equipment or installation.
I've noticed it with the LA feed. This happens mostly when I'm on channel 7 (KABC local HD), but is fine when I'm on 87 (ABCW HD). In addition to having a blank screen sometimes, I've also had it where CBS was in a 4:3 screen even though it was an HD channel. The picture was "squished" but eventually opened up again.
