I just want something that takes good pics and don't care about all kinds of bells and whistles.

for a point and shoot... i wouldn't go any way other than canon... i have their sd550... which is several models old... so i bet you could find one on ebay for around $200...
not too many bells and whistles... but still a few things you can mess with in manual mode...
it takes THE BEST pictures I have ever seen from a point and shoot... if you would like some examples, PM me your email address and I'll drop you a couple of them...

I'll echo AirRocker's claim on Canon. I just bought an A560 for my parents for Christmas. For a point and shoot, it does very well. They are pretty straight forward, and also have some advanced options if you want to play with it a little. The quality of the images out of that $140ish camera I got them were just about as good as my $400 Konica-Minolta.

Just replaced an aging Fuji with a Pentax Optio E40. Great camera, nice features and easy to use, great pictures too. It was around $150.00

You can't go wrong with Canon...
I bought my wife a Panasonic Lumix. I don't recall the model number off hand, but, it's a 6x optical zoom with image stabilization (she's not got the steadiest of hands!). I believe hers is 6MP. It's a few years old now.
We've been really pleased with these pictures. Her particular camera doesn't have an AF-Assist lamp, so low light shooting is not the greatest. Aside from that one little thing, it's been great.
Not a ton of bells and whistles - they'd just confuse her. She just wants to point and shoot, and she wanted to be able to zoom way in...
My parents have two different Casio Exilm cameras and they really like them as well. REALLY big LCD screen in a relatively small camera body. They got theirs at Costco, though I don't know what price they paid for either. The Casio is nice in that it has a charging dock that comes with the camera.

I'm a Canon XTi guy myself, but if I were to go point and shoot again I'd go Lumix DMC-TZ3K 7

By FAAAARRRR the best P&S out there for that price. Sure, Canon makes an unrivaled SLR, but Lumix has them beat here.
I agree with the Canon lovers. I have a Canon PowerShot A80 and have been very happy with it. My son has a Kodak Z712, which can often be had for around $229 - a bit above your target price, but a really nice camera for the price. I also have a Nikon D40X digital SLR, which I REALLY like. For casual photography, though, a moderate priced Canon such as the A570 IS is an outstanding camera -- 7.1 MP, 4X optical zoom.

Canon XTi here also. That would be out of the range, but I would feel comfortable with anything in the Canon range.

This seems to be the direction I'm leaning.

(I also have the D40x and really like it. Bought it for myself for Christmas @ Costco with the 18-55 lens and 55-200 VR lens for about $500, I think)
I've always found www.dcresource.com to be a really good site for digital camera reviews and comparisons.
He takes alot of pictures with the different cameras and different settings so you can see how they all work. He has a couple of spots around San Francisco that frequents and he basically takes all the same pictures with the different cameras he reviews. It's nice for comparing different models within your price point, as you can see for yourself how the pictures compare.
He's a pretty fair reviewer, as well - not afraid to point out the flaws in a camera.

HP digital cameras are consistently priced lower than the competitors and are feature-rich and comparable quality.
